OFFICE OF CURRENT INTELLIGENCE 9 March 1955 MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director (Intelligence) SUBJECT: Offshore Island Situation General Military activity in the offshore islands continues at a low level. The lull may be explained by the presence of American naval units in Formosan'waters. The carrier Wasp, and possibly the Midway, together with cruisers and a destroyer screening force, were operating off southern Formosa on 6 March. In noting this activity, Peiping radio has charged the US with "military provQcation." Negative, except for indications that Communist troops on the nearby mainland are continuing training exercises. Quemoy Communist troops have been observed constructing fortifica- tion on Wu Hsu, a small island about 6,000 yards south of Tatan and Ehrtan. Weather Forecast for the next 48 hours is partly cloudy with morning coastal fog., Winds northerly, shifting to northeast, 18-22 knots,. Sea cnditions moderate to rough.
