Preliminary to the formal meeting of the Group,, showed
two color slides prepared for 1)1)/P depicting th epcrting System.
He also sheered a slide outlining a new concept by which field stations
can obtain Information from the RI index through high-speed "automated"
25X1A means--after than-system Is Installed. Accatding to this con-
cept, field stations would use Flexov rites (cc other tape-producing
typewriters) to query the index. Such queries would then be encrypted,
trans tted exeo:trically to Headquarters, decrypted, serviced by the
25X1 A system, encrypted, branamitted electrically back to the statioa,
d?c red, and reproduced--all by mechanical processes, and in a very
brief period.

(a) The Chairman asked fm comments on the draft of the &qness
to the Deputy Directors which was circulated to members on 29
January.
No changes were suggested in the body of the report. But
25X1 A touched off a discussion as to whether it was correctly
led since it dealt only with the ~Reeporting System. He also 25X1 A
suggested an earlier data for the Group to make Its "comprehensive"
report of progress to the Deputy Directs as (the draft had pro osed 31
December 1960). Several members agreed with pointing 25X1 A
out specific areas of Interest which a comprehensive report should
cover in addition to those involved in the system. 25X1 A
(c) The Chairman concluded the discussion by directing the
Secretary to:
(1) r e w r i t e the o paragraph to make the paper an
25X1 A "interim report on the system" rather then a general
repot of progress from the Planning Group.
(2) Change the final paragraph to substitute aftirmatlve
statements for the recommendations appearing there, and to
move up by about six months the date for a "comprehensjve"
report on the Group's activities.

Pursuing the comments reported in the preceding paragraph, the
Chairman proposed a meeting of the Group In about three weeks to
dlascusae some of the topicae of current Interest which have not been
covered In discussions of the -ystem. He asked the members 25X1 A
named below to prepare short summaries of the -topics listed and to
provide the Secretary with copies to be circulated to the entire Group
in advance of the meeting.
