The Central Intelligence Agency has instituted a program
which will examine articles or book reviews from a classified
CIA publication, Studies in Intel1i7ence, for possible
declassification and release. Studies has been issued since
1955, and on a quarterly basis since 1958. We have determined
that the enclosed article or book review contains information
of interest to the Department of Defense.
Enclosed is: "origins of Central intelligence", volume 8,
number 3, summer 1964, Confidential. This article is the first
chapter (without footnotes) of a history of CIA written in
1953, and concerns events no later than the end of World War II.
Please review the enclosure under the mandatory
declassification review provisions of Executive Order 12356,
and return it to us with your determination that, as far as
Defense Department equities are concerned, it may be
declassified and released, should be denied in whole, or can be
released in a sanitized form. Please indicate those portions
you wish deleted by enclosing them in red brackets and
indicating the appropriate EO 12356 exemption.
