SUBJECT: Invitation from Senators Boren and McCain
1. Senators David Boren (D., OK) and John McCain (R., AZ)
have invited you to attend the first annual Congressional
Scholarship Award Dinner on Tuesday, 7 March 1989. The
Scholarship Awards Dinner provides financial assistance to
students participating in Georgetown University institutes
specializing in foreign affairs and political journalism.
2. Because of Senator Boren's chairmanship of the Senate
Select Committee on Intelligence, I recommend that you accept
to lend your name on a personal basis to the Honorary Dinner
Committee for this bipartisan, nonpolitical event. Based on
advice from the Office of General Counsel, your acceptance
would be for the use of your name only and not of your title.
3. I recommend that you decline the invitation to the
dinner. All members of Congress sponsor such events, and,I
would rather not open you up for charges of favoritism by
accepting some and necessarily declining many others.
4. If you agree, I will send the attached note on your
behalf accepting to serve on the Honorary Dinner Committee and
declining to attend the dinner. Please advise.
