Subjects of immediate concern are discussed I. Middle East Baghdad is increasing its efforts to effect a quick military victory over the Kurdish rebels. The prospects for such a solution seem dim, however, particularly in view of the approach of winter weather which will hamper opera- tions for both sides. Stepped-up support to the Kurds by Tehran in the last two weeks increases the possibility of further clashes between Iraqi and Iranian forces in the border area. 25X1DOa Ii. USSR-Eastern Europe We see no indications of hostile intent in the mili- tary activity of the USSR and other Warsaw Pact nations. 25X1 D0a III. Southeast Asia In South Vietnam, the main thrust of military action will continue in Military Region 1, where the Communists per- sist in efforts to gain control of key terrain overlooking Route 1.
