DATA SUMMARIES
(S/NF/SG/LIMDIS) Following are perceived highlights from
each source. The period covered is 3-4 November 1993.
- (S/NF/SG/LIMDIS) Source A:
-- Weapons and munitions in Somalia are coming from North
Africa. There have been arms, etc., throughout this region for a
long time and weapons are easily accessible.
- (S/NF/SG/LIMDIS) Source B:
-- The two major factions are basically "set" as far as
weapons are concerned. They (especially Aideed's group) are
relying on confiscated armaments (i.e. weapons, and particularly
ammo) to restock. They both currently have sufficient stores.
-- Hand grenades are going to become a significant weapon
of choice if the U.N./U.S. forces reinitiate patrolling and
active monitoring of the situation within the streets of
Mogadishu.
-- A pipeline or conduit will be sabotaged. This will
interrupt an important asset to the U.N. effort.
- (S/NF/SG/LIMDIS)
-- The country of Afghanistan is currently supplying
weapons and munitions to Somalia. Some of the weapons and
munitions are entering Somalia through waterways by small
vessels. Once the crates of weapons and munitions reach the
country, they are carried by "simple means" to isolated areas of
the country for use by insurgents. ("Simple means" could imply
donkeys).
