RESEARCK AND CLINICAL APPLICATION OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
HAVE SEEN A "GOLDEN AGE" OF PROGRESS.
SOURCES AT THE STATE ADMINISTRATION OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE
MEDICINE TOLD XINHUA HERE TODAY THAT THE TASKS SET FOR WORKERS IN
THIS FIELD DURING THE SEVENTH FIVE-YEAR PLAN PERIOD (1986-1990) HAVE
ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED.
INSTITUTES OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE, NUMBERING 170
NATIONWIDE, HAVE ACHIEVED PROGRESS IN STUDYING AND CURING VARIOUS
TYPES OF DISEASES, ESPECIALLY ANGIOCARDIOPATHY, MALIGNANT TUMORS AND
BURNS.
SINCE 1986 THE TREATMENT OF MALARIA BY ACUPUNCTURE ANESTHESIA, AS
WELL AS ACUPUNCTURE AND MOXIBUSTION. BONESETTING, AND MASSAGING HAVE'
ALL MADE RAPID PROGRESS AND EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO TREAT AIDS
WITH TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE.
BY THE END OF 1990 THERE WERE 2..70 HOSPITALS OF TRADITIONAL
CHINESE MEDICINE, OF WHICH 1,456 ARE AT COUNTY LEVEL. THERE IS A
HOSPITAL OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE IN EVERY COUNTY-IN 20 OF
CHINA'S PROVINCES AND MUNICIPALITIES, THE SOURCES SAID.
THERE ARE 196,000 BEDS IN THESE HOSPITALS, 66,000 MORE THAN THERE
WERE IN 1985. THE NUMBER OF DOCTORS OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
IN CHINA IS 560,000 AT PRESENT, ACCORDING TO THE SOURCES.
CHINA NOW HAS 32 INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING TEACHING

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE, AND DURING THE SEVENTH FIVE-YEAR PLAN
PERIOD A TOTAL OF 24,000 STUDENTS GRADUATED.
THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE TRADE OF TRADITIONAL
CHINESE MEDICINE IS 460.000 ACROSS THE COUNTRY. FROM 1986 TO 1990
THE TOTAL EXPORT VALUE OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINES REACHED 1.3
BILLION U.S. DOLLARS-WORTH. IN 1990 THE OUTPUT OF TRADITIONAL
CHINESE MEDICINE WAS 190,000 TONS, VALUED AT 5.1 BILLION YUAN, THE
SOURCES ADDED.
MEANWHILE, A NATIONWIDE INVESTIGATION OF SOURCES OF TRADITIONAL
CHINESE MEDICINAL INGREDIENTS WAS COMPLETED DURING THE SEVENTH FIVE-
YEAR PLAN PERIOD.
IN RECENT YEARS, THE POPULARITY OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
AND ACUPUNCTURE AND MOXIBUSTION TREATMENTS HAS BEEN INCREASING
WORLDWIDE. CHINA HAS ESTABLISHED RELATIONS WITH MORE THAN 130
COUNTRIES AND REGIONS FOR ACADEMIC AND COMMERCIAL EXCHANGES OF
TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS. AND A GROUP OF
FOREIGN SPECIALISTS IN THIS FIELD HAS BEEN TRAINED IN CHINA.
THE WORK OF SEVEN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE CO-OPERATION CENTERS
SPONSORED BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION IN CHINA HAS BEEN
REMARKABLE IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS. fN ADDITION, THE HEADQUARTERS OF
THE WORLD ACUPUNCTURE AND MOXIBUSTION FEDERATION AND THE WORLD
MEDICAL QIGONG SOCIETY WERE ESTABLISHED IN CHINA DURING THIS PERIOD.
