Memorandum for Dr. Bowie
Subject: Book, "Khyber"
1. The book I mentioned to you is "Khyber" by Charles
Miller and published in 1977 by MacMillan, New York.
Amb. Sam Berger, now retired, brought it to my attention.
2. It is the story of British India's Northwest
Frontier from the time of the British East India Company
which gained control of most of India in the 17th Century
until India's partition in 1947. Historical in nature, not
fiction, the scene is mostly laid in what is now Afghanistan,
Pakistan and Western India. To me, it provides keen insights
into the nature of the people and of the country of today's
Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is an action-filled book
involving blood-thirsty, cruel and fierce tribespeople who,
I suspect, have not changed much down to the present. Believe
you will enjoy reading it.
