Colby as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency at 11:00 a, m. today in the Oval Office. Mr. Colby succeeded Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger as Director of the CIA, He was confirmed' by the Senate on August 1, 1973. Mr. Colby will be sworn in by U. S. Federal District Court Judge George L. Hart, Jr. Also expected to attend the ceremony will be members of Mr. Colby's family, Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, , Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger, Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Lieutenant General Vernon Walters, Deputy Director of the CIA. There will be a photo opportunity. Colby. was born in St. Paul, Mi.anesota, on January 4, 1920. e son of an Army officer, his early life was spent in various posts, inclacling a three-year period in Tientsin, China. In 19-w0 he was :.~ graduated from Princeton University and ;n 1941 j, of ned the 'United States Army, serving in the Parachute Field Artillery. When the Of is of Strategic Services put out a call for French speakers in 1943, Mr. C olby volunteered and, in. 1944 was parachuted behind enemy lines in north central France to work with a resistance unit.
