SUBJECT: Chilean Government Involvement in Narcotics Traffic
Pursuant to your written instructions on my memo of November 12
concerning possible Chilean Government involvement in the inter-
national narcotics and counterfeit currency traffic, I have taken
steps---without a written directive--to obtain a report on this subject
within thirty days.
I met this morning with representatives of the CIA and the Bureau of
Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs to indicate our interest in further
examining the question of the Chilean Government's involvement in
narcotics and counterfeit currency traffic and 'or the involvement of
Allende personally, or members of the Marxist coalition. I indicated
that we would like the CIA to coordinate this effort, and to draw upon
other intelligence agencies as required. I stressed the sensitivity of
this subject and the importance of holding it very closely. A report
will be submitted to me within thirty days.
You may wish to indicate to the Attorney General that priority attention
is being given to developing more information on this subject.
