KISSINGER FROM: WINSTON LORD SUBJECT: Filling in Yahya on your China Trip Attached at Tab B is a backchannel from Ambassador Farland relaying Yahya's hope that your recent China visit was as successful as the July: one. He had not yet heard from the Chinese but promised to let us know soonest if he receives any word from them, and he would be glad to be helpful at this juncture if such help were required. You will recall that the Chinese informed Yahya well in advance of your October trip and also that Yahya asked us, if-appropriate, to make a public statement. on the need for peace in the Asian subcontinent during your Peking visit. I believe we should give Yahya a rundown on your trip. Attached at Tab A is a backchannel to Ambassador Farland with a message for Yahya which hopefully combines the elements of forthcomingness and innocuousness. That you approve the cable at Tab A. Kissinger October 29, 1971 TO: Islamabad for Ambassador Farland Only the following message from me: "Ambassador Farland has informed us of your October 28 conversation Thanks for your October 28 telegram. Please give President Yahya accomplished. We were able to reach agreement in principle on the major concrete arrangements for the President's visit to China. There will be a joint announcement of the date for the trip during the latter part of November. with him. The President and I warmly appreciate your continuing interest in the development of our relations with the People's Republic of China which you and your government have been so instrumental in assisting. Your message to Prime Minister Chou En-lai before my recent trip to China was very thoughtful and constructive. I believe the extensive conversations that I held with Prime Minister Chou En-lai served well to clarify further the views of both avoid hostilities in the subcontinent. I outlined the various steps that the United States has taken to assist Pakistan in the economic and humanitarian fields, as well as our political efforts to reduce tension in the region and our strong warnings to India not to initiate hostilities.
