FROM: WINSTON LORD
SUBJECT: Filling in Yahya on your China Trip
Attached at Tab B is a backchannel from Ambassador Farland relaying
Yahya's hope that your recent China visit was as successful as the
July: one. He had not yet heard from the Chinese but promised to
let us know soonest if he receives any word from them, and he would
be glad to be helpful at this juncture if such help were required. You
will recall that the Chinese informed Yahya well in advance of your
October trip and also that Yahya asked us, if-appropriate, to make a
public statement. on the need for peace in the Asian subcontinent during
your Peking visit.
I believe we should give Yahya a rundown on your trip. Attached at
Tab A is a backchannel to Ambassador Farland with a message for
Yahya which hopefully combines the elements of forthcomingness and
innocuousness.
That you approve the cable at Tab A.
