Bulgaria's only naval base is the port of Varna where all warships are located. 2. The largest warship in the Bulgarian Navy is the destroyer GEORGI DIMITROV which displaces 3,000 'tons and carries a crew of approximately 450 officers and men. The ship is armed with eight guns of approximately 115 mm., four heavy anti- aircraft machine guns, and approximately 10 machines for launching under-water mines (sic). 3. Other vessels in the Bulgarian Navy includes a. Two minesweepers, T=72 and T-73, each.armed with two cannons and two anti- aircraft machine guns; the minesweepers carry a crew of. approximately 120 men and officers; b. Eight subchasers called PEKA; these subchasers are armed with two cannons and several machine guns each; they carry a crew of approximately 120 men and officers; c. Three ships known as LUIRISEN, which are armed with four antiaircraft machine guns each; d. Approximately 15 "motorboatsFY armed with one small gun and two machine guns each, and carrying a crew of approximately 15 persons; these motorboats are known as ODNE; and e. Approximately 10 minelayers, each with a crew of 10.. The majority of the-above=mentioned naval units were,-consigned to-Bulgaria by the USSR,on'27 October 1951, the anniversary-of the-goviet Revolution. These vessels are believed to--have.been Germanroriginally'and were obtained by the USSR as reparations after World War II. On the larger ships, approximately 30 percent of the crew is made up of Soviet specialists who instruct the Bul- garian-sailors. 5. A Soviet. submarine base is located on San Ivan Island near Sozopol which has been-declared-an o f'!Llimits..zone - even- for Bulgarian ships.
