Degtyarev MG. Weapon for training purposes: PPSh SMGsate of ma nufacture unknown . d. Personal equipment:.. Gas mask iodel and date,of manufacture unknown)' Cargo pack Entrenching shovel Cartridge pouch (for 15-20 rounds) e. Weapons and equipment for squads, platoons, companies, battalions and regiment were given above 5e.e paragraphs 1- V. f. All of the above-mentioned weapons,5ee paragraphs 1-,V 'were standard and were fully described in reference manuals. I have never seen, heard of, or read about any new type weapons, vehicles-por equipment. I have never seen or heard of any semi- automatic rifles. 6. The carbine is a very dependable weapon. The ammunition was,.always in very good condition, and I never heard of ruptured cartridges, even when there was dirt in the carbine chamber. The Soviet sniper rifle (7.62 mm. carbine with sniper scope) was also a very efficient weapon and the scope maintained its zero. 25X1 25X1 7. Fifty per cent of the soldiers were good riflemen;' five men out of ten were marksmen, and one or two out of ten were experts. 8. Even though the-average.-soldier had two.hoursrof bayonet drill per ..week,.the Soviet soldier was not a very good bayonet fighter. The average soldier in" `the Soviet Army knew four or, 'at ''the most, five bayonet drills. The soldiers were trained to yell- and make much noise during bayonet fighting, in order to intimidate the opponent. The fixed bayonet on the late model carbine was not a hindrance because it was collapsible. The Soviets engaged wide and oblique-targets with direct fire in short. bursts, and deep targets with cross-fire in long bursts from emplaced machine guns. I believe that the Soviets never used indirect fire in employing emplaced machine guns.. I do not believe. that such fire is possible. I have no information on how the Soviets employed their machine guns on final protective lines; under conditions of poor visibility, targets were engaged according to sound. 10. The Soviet rifleman carried the.'ollowing items during combat: Cargo pack with personal items, , rations, and blanket Entrenching shovel Overcoat (rolled across the shoulders) Seventy-five rounds of ammunition (20 rounds in the ammunition pouch, the balance in the pack) Weapon (carbine, PPSh or Nagant revolver) The total weight of this equipment was 32 kg. At"s o'time was the 57 mm. artillery to be farther back than 50 M. from the infantry on the front lines. 12. ?I.hea'd that the Soviet Army had special winter equipment and olothing for Aretic, regions. I. however, have never worn or seen any such clothing or equipment. 13. The Soviet Army had no special preventive measures against trench foot; the usual instructions were to change the foot wrapping cloths, which were worn instead of socks, as often as practicable, and to wash and massage the feet whenever possible. 25X114. 'I never heard of the "Voice of America". I believe that none of my fellow soldiers ever had occasion to listen to'a private radio. Unit SuQ ly and Maintenance 15.. Each soldier in the Soviet Army received the following items of clothing and equipment: One uniform (for work, same as Class "A" -- issued for six months) One Class "A" uhiform, (for parades, inspections, etc. -- iss'aed for six months) One pair of boots (issued for eight months) One set of underwear (changed every 10 days, when the soldier was required to take a bath) Two pairs of foot wrapping cloths,, worn instead of socks (heavy cotton for winter, light cotton for summer) One pair of heavy cotton gloves (issued only in winter'-- exchanged in summer) One winter cap, or a summer overseas cap One overcoat (issued for two years) Two belts (issued for two years) Cargo pack Canteen and cover ) issued for the entire period of service Entrenching tool Ammunition pouch Carbine (or other weapon) Seventy-five rounds of ammunition (kept in the weapons room) All repairs on all items of clothing and equipment (except boots) had to be made by the individual soldier. All equipment and weapons were inspected daily by platoon leaders. 16.. The unit of fire for my weapon was-75 rounds of ammunition. unable to give any additional information on this subject. 17. Companies and battalions did not have kitchens or food supply depots. In the garrison, all food was prepared by the regimental kitchen and food supplies were picked up from the division food supply depot by a regimental truck. In the field, food was prepared by battalion kitchens and food supplies were picked up from the regi- mental kitchen by a battalion truck. To my knowledge, the regiment kept a food supply for three to four weeks, with the exception of' meat and bread, which were picked up from the division every three or four days. All food. supplies were brought by regimental trucks once a month. I have no further details. 18. No supplies or repair facilities were taken out into the field in peacetime. I imagine that,in case of an emergency, all- supplies-would be moved by truck, Approved For Release 2002/07/26 : CIA-RDP80-0081OA000800440008-7 Approved For Release 2002/07/26: CIA-RDP80-00810A000800440008-725X1 A SECRET/SECURITY INFORMATION. -13- 0 19.
