1. in January 1954 newcomers to Canton could not obtain aooammodations in hotels or
private homes without permanent or temporary resident certificates. Persons
arriving in Canton from Macao or Hong Kong were required to leave their entry
permits with the police; no temporary resident certificates were issued to them.l
2. Each family was required to report to the police before 2100 hours if a member
of the family was away for the night and if persons in addition to the regular
family were staying at the family house.
1. Comment. Presumably persons arriving in Canton from Macao or

ding in Canton, or eligible for permanent resident certificates.
