On 16 May 1953, 20 VP soldiers were laying runway mats at Bautzen-Litten airfield. The auxiliary runway extended to the east across the Purschwitz- Neuparschwitz road, about as far as kilometer marker 5.1 on the Bautzenn-? Weissenberg road. There, the terrain had to be raised for a further extension of the runway and the required sand had already arrived. Earth piles in the northeastern section of the field were being leveled by means of a dredger and the earth was trucked away for grading the field area. Four dredgers were used in the northwestern section of the field and two dredgers were observed near the entrance on the southwestern edge of the field, The field boundary was guarded by one VP sentry each at the southwestern and southern entrances and a civilian of the Bauunion was posted on the northern border, at the barrier across the Neupurschw:itz- Purschwitz road. 3. Between U and 14 May, source observed that runway mats were being hauled on lorries from the storage) site on the northern outskirts of Neupurschwitz to the landing field on which they were being laid to a point in line with kilo meter marker 5.4 on the Neupur schwitz-Wurschen road. A temporary building for the workers was erected in the northwestern corner of the field south of Litten. 4. The husa ren Kasern.e in the southeastern section of Bautzen, is bordered, to the. north, east and south by a 2.2.-meter-high brick wall with barbed wire on top and to the west by an iron fence. The main entrance is at the western side and closed gate is at the eastern side. On 16 M.471,, civilian cars with masons, and ainters4 equipment entered the Husaren Kaserne, trucks, loaded with iron plates, each 3 to 4 meters long, 30 to 40 cm wide and with a special profile, left the installation. In the morn:tng of 19 May, about 100 VPL troops were drilling in the 'barracks yard ands within one hour, eight trucks loaded with metal plates left the installation head.`?5.ng toward bitten.
