In areas of concentrated Jewish participate in their local committee activities as Jewishgfactions. These factions, however, are strongly tied to the Soviet intelligence agencies. 2. Jewish political parties are, Vithout exception, only formally independent of Co>Ilrtluniam, being in reality its followers and militant warriors. The Zionist Novoment (Zionist Socialist Jewish Party), for example, is endeavoring to implement the USSR plan for a Jewish state in Palestine by awakening among world Jewry a yearning for independent political life. Although it was even then a center of Communist activity and a netwot?'s- of the Soviet intelligence service, the Band included many Jewish Socialist leaders who continued to oppose Communism. Two recent suggestions;: have been made with regard to"improving the situ_tion of Jews in Poland. The first, made during a Central Committee meeting by J',.--.cob Berman, Secretary,of the ??R Politburo, was for formation of a. special Komisariut on Jewish yroblems. This Komisariut would be attached to the Cabinet and would devote itself to bettering Jevdsh living conditionssnd ,)ro- noting "brotherly relationship between Poles and Jews." The second suggestion emanated from a 28 Mar 47 meeting of the Central Jewish Committee. The Committee ;proposed construction ox' synagogues and educe.tion of rabbis as a direct method for holding Jews to their ?cith and contributing to their general welfare.
