1. (Internal Use Only - JMM) Talked to Ed Braswell, Chief of
Staff, Senate Armed Services Committee, who said Senator Stennis had
definitely gotten the message of the Director's call the week before last,
but Braswell will remind Stennis when he is in touch with him in the next
day or two that the Director still hopes to have a word with him, at least
by phone, in the near future.
2. (Internal Use Only - JMM) Called Ed Braswell of Senate
Armed Services Committee, Frank Slatinshek of House Armed er.vie
committee, and Ralph Preston of House Appropriations Committee, to
set up a meeting at Headquarters tomorrow to discuss our problems in
Southeast Asia in view of the Fulbright Amendment. Slatinshek is unavailable
but the others, together with Bill Woodruff of the Senate Appropriations
Committee, will meet with us at 9:30 a. m. tomorrow.
3. (Internal Use Only - JMM) Richard G. Caper, Jr. , Assistant
to the Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs, and General James F.
Lawrence, his deputy, visited Headquarters for lunch with Messrs Houston,
and me. During our conversation Capen was interested in
w en t e Director had seen or would see Senator Russell, remarking that
Secretary Laird wanted to see the Senator as soon thereafter as possible.
4. (Unclassified - GLC) Miss Judy Hoffman, on the staff of
Senator Gaylord A. Nelson (D., Wis.), called to say that
had called their office referring to several
Newsweek articles about CIA soldiers of fortune and said he wanted to
contact the Agency about a job with us. I told Miss Hoffman that _
should be disabused of the "soldiers of fortune" notion and merely
suggested that they tell him that if he is interested in regular employ-
ment with CIA, he write to our Director of Personnel.
