1. The University of Vienna is composed of three political groups: The
Christian Party, the Socialist Party, and the Communist Party. Both pro-
the Communist party membership includes from 150-200 students.

in 1952 there were too many students enrolled in the
School of Redicine at the Vienna University in respect to facilities avail-
able. '"here were about 1500 new enrollees each year, ``aft of which about
s.'
800 were retained as having adequate qualifications. Instruction in the
school of medicine is inadequate due to lack of well-trained professors.
The older and more experienced ones have left the University, and only
the younger ones remain. These do not have sufficient knowledge or train-
ing to give proper instruction to the students. Each year there is a new
and untrained, head (Professor Arzt) who acts as head of the medical school,
and this results in lack of co-ordinated program and policy from year to
year.
3. Instruction in the school of pharmacy is given in the following stages:
a. Inorganic chemistry, which includes analytical and labora-
tory work.

Present requirements for a Master's pharmaceutical degree are
six semesters, or three years. This is obviously too little
time for adequate preparation, and the program does not have the
thoroughness for. which the Vienna University has heretofore been
noted.
3. The Allgemaine Krankenhaus and the Vienna Municipal Hospital are
not identical. The former is in the ninth zone, which is US-con-

11there is a shortage of drugs in Hungary, and
what supply ..ere is has been bought by the, Soviets. As there
were large supplies of US-made drugs in, Vienna, the .Soviets.managed
to - chase 'some of these for use. In Hungary
TO -The Biochemie Plant in Kund.l, Austria is now making, large quanta
25X1 ties of penicillin of excellent quality. The people operating this
plant wor.r closely with the French, as it is located,,,in the,.French
25X1 Zone. Up to 1952, the phar-
macy of the Vienna Municipal Hospital had purchased , 0 bottles,
each containing 200,000 units..of penicillin. This was. purchased
from. the Biochemie Plant at Kundl-*
25X1 cost of this was greater than US-made penicillin. The wholesale
price of Schenle.y-made penicillin was-three.schillings.per bottle..

to medical practioneers was twelve schillings per bottle. II

schillings eighty groschen and that it:is cheaper to buy US-made
