50 Training at Lilitary Posts.
Those units which renained at their posts after the transfer of their
divisions to the maneuver areas continued their tl'ainine in and near
their posts in July 1950. This training primnrily affected the replace-
ments which had arrived in June. The training included drivinf of motor
vehicles and tanks. In the meantime part of these replacements joined
their respective units stationed in the maneuver areas, i.e. replacements
arrived at the Templin maneuver area in mid-June 1950, in letzline Heath
in late June 1950, and in Altengrabow in June 1950. /9/, /10/, an 1/.
6. Status of Training.
The replacement of well trained personnel by young soldiers has certainly
affected the training status of the units concerned. The status of train-
ing, and thus the combat value, of the units has been lowered since the
beginning of June 1950. This deficiency will be eliminated only aftr the
basic training of the replacements at the military posts has ended, ard
atter a prolonged training period of recruits, within their new units,
ha e been carried cut at the maneuver areas. The Soviet units All there-
fore not regain their full combat readiness before the early fall of 1950.
7. Personnel.
a. According to nueerous transportation reports, large shipments of
replacements continued to arrive in the Soviet Lone of Oermany in
the secone half of Jure and early July 195:'. For example, 20 ship-
ments of 60 railroad cars, each loaded with replacements. massed
25X1 through T!elestrin-Kietz Iron 211 June to 3 July 1950.
25X1 :esides these trains individual
snipments or soldiers arrived in Germany via Frankfurt/Oder during
the same period. /1/ Accordine to available information? a total
of 52 shipments of replacements arrived in Germany from early June
to 3 July 1950. These Observations were confuseed by nlx:erous other
reports of individual shipments observed in the Soviet on of
Cerisany, ane on the arrival of replacements at various military
posts such A'S kotsdam, iloeberitz? !;atekern? eathenau, 311re, Jueter-
boe, Rosslaue Stendal, Dresden, Coolear-Nohra ane Frankfurt/Oder.
Since no other reports on the arrival of replacements have been
received since 3 July 1950 it is possible that the arrival of new
recruits was on the whole, completed in early July 1950.
b. The return to the U.S.S.. of older nee classes due for discharge
continued. in June 1950. According to available information, such
shipments were observed in July 1950. t''er example, a shierent of
about 5,000 men was reported from -eimar in late June and early
July 1950, and another one of .400 men from Hillersieben. /12/411/.
The following east-bound troop shipments were observed from early June
to enrly July 1950: nine trains proceeding via Kueetrin; and 21
trains which were presevably directed to Frankfurt/Oder via LuesLrin.
Some of these trains are possibly included in the nunber or nine
trains reportedly passing throueh iluestrin. /13/
co A comnarison of the incoming and outgoing shipments shows that the
nurber or replacements arriving in the zone far exceeds that of soldiers
returned. /1)e/
SQ eeturn of Loviet as:ardente.
In early June 1950 it was roeorted from eosslau that, according to a new
order, all the Soviet dependents still in (Jermage are scheduled to be
returned to the t!.:7..'os./15/ In early July 1950 similar reports were
received from Potsdam, ornbure and Cottbus.

During the period, two reports on the supply dumps in the Soviet Zone of
Germany were transmitted. /17//18/. Tvo more reports will be submitted.

11. Transportation Gituation.
a. The transportation situation during the period may be considered
satisfactory. Operational difficulties resulted only from the
13 control points established around Berlin for 11 control of
freight traffic to and from Berlin. /21/ /114/ The number of
trains passing through the border stations along the Oder-Veisse
lino continued at the normal rate.
b. Reports on the coril situation have been ,received only from
individual railroad stations, so that over-all figures on the
railroad coal reserves available in July 1950 cannot be
These individual reports: however, showed that coal reserves,
especially hard coal resorver.7, were increasing. It may be
assured that the 200,000 ton mark, ten (Lays supply, of the
previous month has been surpassed.
c. Construction projects.
The conversion of the Loewenberg-Neustadt-;qathenow branch
line to a moin line is nrogrossing. The installation of
Live sidings end a connecting curve south of Neustadt was
reported. /22/ and /23/
(2) The construction of a direct connection from Rostock'
Port to Bramow, and the expansion of this railroad sta-
tion into a receiving station improved the railroad faci-
lities of the Rostock-arnemnende Port. /24/
(3) By an agreement with Poland, the Coorlitz-Zittau railroad
line, which follows the Lausit7.er Noisse Aiver, was re-
opened. This line is chiefly ,for workers going to or
from their place of work. /25/
(W The 84km stoetch remaining between qeitwein and Yuestrin-
Klotz on the Vrankturt/Oder line is being, reconstructed
as a sipgle track. This will establish a direct link
between these two important border crossing stations. /26/
(5) The reconstruction of the dismantled single-track rail-
road line from Earth to frr-lrow vie angst is scheduled
for the near future. It would again link the health
resorts on the Toatic Sea with the railroad not ci the
sone. This eivos the project both economic and military
importance. /27/

significance, may have been caused by the ,re,,.ent poli-
tical situation:
