4. The crankshafts appear to be fairly well ground. During a recent visit,
the crankshaft turning lathe was being stripped and reconditioned in place,
The crankshaft plant apparently produces 70 to'75 crankshafts ?a day-,3 The
measuring gauges employed are of the visual type, and there is no evidence
of air being used for measuring.
5. The factory consists of.two"blocks of buildings. One block contains
the foundry and press shop. The other block, on the other side of the
road, contains .the machinery equipment and assembly line.
one eight-hour shift six. days a week. There are insufficient foremen bpd
inspectors, and the plant has no apprentice system. Machinery is old and
predominantly of American origin. There is no evidence of a tool room or
of reserve machine tools. The rolling mill is out of date. There is a
railroad line in the plant. Power is taken off the grid, and the factory
is equjlpped with good lighting and heating.2
The main conveyor belt is 140 yards long, and the tractors are about one
foot apart during assembly. the plant produces
about 160 tractors a day. This estimate is based on the timing of the
conveyor belt, which appears to produce one tractor every three minutes.
1. The Dzerzhinskiy Tractor Fiactory is located about 45 minutes by car from
the center of Stalingrad. The factory has its own foundry and also pro-
duces most of the auxiliary equipment for the tractors. Thetractors are
strongly built and have a one and one-half hp motor for starting the
diesel engine. Very few completed tractors were seen.'
2. The plant has 15,000 employees, 40 percent of whom are women. There is
