The _5 Engineer Battalion
As of May 19L1.98 the 5 Engineer Battalion, located in .Ruse, con- 25X1
sisted of two caipanies each composed of two platoons of four squads. The
complement of the battalion was approximately 130 (sic).

No field training was given during basic training.
1i.. In September 1949, the 5 Battalion took part in maneuvers between Ruse and
Razgrad, and was commended for its performance.
Infantry Regiment, 25X1
5. An/ infantry regiment, located in Zvezdets, was
organized in May 19 . or y men rom 31 nfantry Regiment and 140 men from 19 25X1
infantry Regiment were transferred to this newly organized regiment. The personnel
was assembled at Burgas and billeted in barracks of 2L Infantry Regiment, which,
at the time,, was encamped at Krushevo (N L2-33, E 27?05), Burgas okoliya. After
the regiment was organized, it moved to the encampment of 24 Infantry Regiment at
Krushevo and stayed there until October 1950, when it moved into new permanent
barracks in Zvezdets. At that time the complement of this regiment was approxi-
mately 200 (sic).

8. A garrison located in the northeastern outskirts of Zvezdets and covering approxi-
mately 100 decares of land surrounded by barbed wire, includes the following

b. One 3-story barracks, 50 by 10 meters in size;
c. One 2..story barracks, 30 by 10 meters in size, housing the regimental
artillery;
d. Two 2-story billets for officers;
e. A bakery;
f. A three-car garage;

Engineer :Battalion,
10. An engineer battalion, located in Burgas, was'.allegedly,,organized in25X1
the autumn of 1950. The battalion was composed of two engineer companies each
including two platoons of three squads. Between December 1950 and April 1951,
the battalion had approximately 130 officers and men. Commander of the battalion
was Senior First Lieutenant Kurtov

11. The engineer battalion was equipped as follows:
a. Vintovka rifles;
b. Round, metal antitank mines containing five kilograms of explosives;
c. 'ooden antipersonnel mines containing 200 grams of explosives; and
d. General type wooden mines containing five kilograms of explosives.
The battalion had no vehicles other than three horse-drawn wagons. It was
equipped with one mine detecting instrument in the shape of a box, 40 by 30 by
20 centimeters in size, and including receivers, a handle two meters in length,
and a round magnet 30 or 35 centimeters in diameter.
12. The engineer battalion used a portion of the barracks of 24 Infantry Regiment,
on the northeastern side of Burgas. There were three barracks buildings, 50 by
10 meters in size, two of them being occupied by 24 Infantry Regiment and one by
the engineer battalion Arms and supply depots consisted of 25X1
three buildings located in the vicinity of the sea. One of these buildings
measured 12 by 10 meters in size, and the other two were 6 by 4 meters in size.
The depots belonged to 24 Infantry Regiment and were guarded day and night by
two soldiers. A bridge equipment depot belonging to the engineer battalior,was
located approximately 100 meters west of the Burgas Harbor, and 100 meters south
of the station building. This depot, guarded at night by three guards, contained
six rubber pontoon boats, one 4 by 1.2 meters in size, and the other five two by
one meters in size*

h. Two ammunition and weapons depots, 10 by 5 meters in size; in the autumn
of 1950, five truckloads of weapons were brought to these depots; and
i. A radio station located in the garrison yard, with an antenna two meters
high, topped by three rods.
The regiment did not remain in Zvezdets, but was sent to 25X1
the hills around Malko Turnovo to build earthworks which were completed in October
or November of 1950.
13. Two 200 to 250 mm. coastal defense guns are located near 24 Infantry Regiment
barracks in the northeast section of Burgas. These guns are in an open area and
face the sea. They are always under guard by one or two soldiers wearing black
collar insignia. In the vicinity of these two guns, there are concrete gun
shelters and ammunition dumps.
