The airfield was located southwest of Mezoetur (4700 N/20 38 E), south of the u:ezoetur-'fiszafoeldv r (4 6 59 N/ 20 15 E) highway, between the railroad line and road leading from Nezoetur to Szarvae (46 52 N/20 34 E). The field had a length of 3,500 to 4,000 meters from north.-northeast to south-southwest and a width of 1,, 500 meters. Construction work was started in the spring of 1952, apparently Mthout_notice, asT?i` the growing seeds were rolled without :taarning._ The required cons ruction material was transported on barges on the Berettyo 2i.v-er 25X1 to the southwestern section of IIE:adctur. From ;;here, the material was transported on land to the construction site. Throu hout the year of 1952, about 500 workers, mostly forced laborers, were employed. A portion of the :ezoetur- Szarvas railroad line was shifted farther to the west to make room for the landing field. Although construction work was not yet coml.leted in the spring of 1953, operations were started at the field at that time. 2 2. The entrance to the field was at its northern side. The approach road branched off from the Mezoetur-Ti.azafoeldvar highway. The field was surrounded by level fields, individual farms, and trees to the east. The Iezoetur-Szarvar highway ran along the eastern border. Two concrete runways, one extending in N-S and: the other one in NE- SW direction, were constructed at the field. They crossed approximately in their middle sections. Six to 8 large buildings were seen in the northeastern section of the field from the railroad line. There were no hangars. 3 3. During the last observation in June 1953, 8 canvas-covered single-engine monoplanes were parked in the southWestern' cornex''of the field. Slightly north of these aircraft. was a grin-engine plane,. apparently an old transport. I?A-L twin-engine transports over the field were ;astern section of the field in June 1953. Parachute jumps from old seen several times- 0 a portion of the "Kilian Gyoergy School for flying officers of the AIr force" from Szolnok (47 10 N/ 20 11) was stationed at the field. 4 4. An old barracks installation was located 1 km,west of Mezoetur, along the northern side of the road leading from Iezoetur to TiszafoeldvAr. The installation was surrounded by a barbed-wire fence 2 meters high. A Hungarian Air Force unit of about 400 men was quartered in the barracks installation. The guardhouse at the entrance gate was occupied by Hungarian Air Force soldiers wearing light blue service color and a propeller with wings as insignia. Three 3.5-ton Csepel trucks and 3 jeeps were seen in the installation. A disassemble. single-engine monoplane was observed along the northern edge of the yard, west of 5 the garage. Hungarian Air Force soldiers were engaged in assembly work. 5. The municipal football team of Turkeve (47 06 N/20 44 L) included five Hungarian Air Force soldiers who wore ligh1blue uniforms and insignia representing propeller with wings. These soldiers stated that they were stationed in Turkeve. 6 1. [Cor_:inent. Previous re orts differ from the present report in regard to the location of the airfield. The statements in this present report however, are believed to be correct. 2. Comment. Previous information indicated that expansion work was intended to be done at the field. 3. Coanment. The correctness of this first information on the presence of 2 concrete runways is doubted. Cooment. It is stall believed that the field is occupied by a flying school. It is doubted that the infomation on the landings by single-jet aircraft is correct.. For location sketch of airfield, see Annex. Co:ament. The barracks installation was reported previously. It is occupied by the personnel and students of the flying school. For layout sketch of barracks installation, see Annex, sketch 2. The information that Hungarian Air Force troops are stationed in Turkeve was received previously.
