Manfred von Ardenne?s Institute for Research on the Physics of Electrons, Ions, and Ultramieroscopylis located in a villa in Dresden- Weisser Hirsch. At the beginning of 1955 deep cellars were being constructed under the villa. By the second week in July 1955 a number of houses in the neighborhood of the villa had been evacuated and were standing empty. 2. Von Ardenne also directs the work of a recently established research institute in Dresden-Blasewi.tz, the aims of which are the development and manufacture of instruments for use in nuclear physi.cs. Dr. Di.pl. Ing. Alfred Frommhold is expected to be business manager of this institute. Dr. Werner Hartmann?s business address is Vakutronik, Dornbluether Strasse 14, Dresden A 21. 4. Prof. Dr. Gustav Hertzias -research head of the Physics Institute, Leipzig university, directs a team of about LO young research assistants. Among them are: Dipl. Phys. Dietmar Geissler,K eint (fnu), Liebmann (fnu), and Lohmann (fnu). Prof. Dr. Phil. Waldemar Ilberg remains administrative head of the Physics Institute. The building of new premises f or.the Physics Institute, Leipzig University, to replace those destroyed during the war was first discussed in 1950. Work began in 1953. The building was planned in four parts. The first and second part have been completed and are now in use, the third is nearing completion, and the fourth has yet to be started. The laboratories and cellars have no special features. Hertz's appointment to the institute has occasioned no significant change in building p"la.ns. 6. Hertz has chosen to do research in high, vacuum technques. Field emission from insulators under high voltages is a toxic being investigated under his direction. omme t.
