dear Mr. Secretary:
Reference is made to letter of June 18, 1953, from the
Assistant Secretary of State, relative to the minimum period that
an employee must serve at a differential post in a detail status
to become entitled;, by virtue of such detail, to payment of a
prescribed foreign post differential under section 3.1-5-g(l) of the
revised Standardized Regulations recently released by the Depart-
ment of State.
The matter of concern to the Department is stated to arise
where the detail of an employee--the duration of such detail being
specified in the travel order to be for an estimated period of at
least 60 dam-mfrom a nondifferc tial to a differential post, or
from one differential post to another such post classified at a
higher differential rate, is terminated prior to the expiration of
the 60-day estimated period due to circumstances unforeseen at the,
time of assignment.
You are advised that this Office will raise no objection to
the payment of the post differential for the sole reason that,
because of unforeseen circumstances, the actual duration of as
