Combating the, Communist efforts to weaken
LBJ's stand In South Viet Nam is a touchy busine~s
for the Administration. As the President said at his
press conference last week, he welcomes "honest,
forthright discussion" of his Viet Nam policy and he

ASHINGTON: The latest intelligence reports to'
reach the White'House indicate that Hanoi is
confident the U. S. will soon be so embroiled in angry
squabbling about Viet Nam that President Johnson
'. will bow to home front political pressure and pull'
the U. S. out of Southeast Asia.
The Communists, of. course, are
''much too wily to leave such an iffy
development to chance.
The Federal Bureau of Investi-
gation has compiled evidence."wihich
Indicates the Communists are. con=
ducting a highly organized cam-
`.. paign to discredit government policy
on Viet Nam here, at home. The
chief weapon thus far appears to
be the publicity generated by the
picketing, sit-ins, and other demon-
strations of students who are willing

These appears to be little the President himself .can do to stop student protests prompted by~Com-
munist agitators, except to pass the word that their
aim Is hopeless. This, in his way, he is trying to do.
?~
Using.student demonstrations to influence gov-'
erhment policy against the U.S. is a long-standing
technique used successfully by the Communists in
other countries; CIA reports have Indicated jLfLa hey
Communists were behind The student riots in.lApa_n
in 1960 which caused the government to call off a
.projected trip by PresldentOsenhower, and the riots
in Latin Amgrlca the year, before when Vice Prest-
(dent Itichaxd Nixon ?was surrounded, ? jostled and?
insulted.
Not all the beatniks In beards and young girls in .w
madras are Marxists, of course. After all It is Spring

their heels and protest, sop thing--any, old thing-.,

But It Is the official view here that. those Who.
,are not' Communists , are helping the Communist
cause of discrediting U.? S, policy In+Viet'Nam and,
worse, ;they-, are interfering with, and' endangering
tmryee/~~nd legitimate debate on the President}'s foreign .
