THE UNITED FRONT IN COMMUNIST CHINA
This supplement contains corrections,, additions, and
deletions to the text of handbook No. 25X1A2g
"The United Front in Communist China," and is based on
data accumulated subsequent to publication of the handbook.
It is recommended that the changes be entered in the basic
document.
Also attached are data. on two additional organiza-
tions,: to be inserted in the handbook immediately follow-
ing Part III (after page 52). Corrections and additions,
in Appendices A and By to reflect these additions, have
been indicated in the supplement.

Radio Peking announced 5 August 1957 that 241 leaders representing
3,000,000 .clergy and laity met in Peking in July-August 1957, established

The meeting condemned the Vatican for denying the position of the
411egally elected" Vicarius Regiminis Francis Xavier CHANG of Shanghai
Diocese. It also condemned the Vatican._fQr appointment of a "known
imperialist" element, Anthony RIBERI as' representative in Taiwan after
he was expelled from the mainland. RIBERI as Papal Internuncio had
allegedly appointed an Italian priest, Tarciscio MARTINA, as RIBERI's
representative in Peking, The Chinese Communists charged that MARTINA was
connected with the collection of military intelligence and one of the
"criminals found guilty in the plot on the lives. of a.number of..Chinese
leaders which was concocted in 19500
The association resolved that in'the future Communist China will
"maintain with the Vatican purely religious ties that do not violate
the interests and independence of China. They willcut'all political
and economic ties."
Some of those present at the preparatory'meeting of the committee
apparently were opposed to formation of the association and its objec-
tivese These were condemned as "rightists" in propaganda announcing
the association's formation. Among these were Bishop WANG Lun-cheng
of the Nanchuan district, Szechwan; Bishop CHIAO Ti-.sheng of Hopei
Province; TENG Pao-shen, a priest from Peking; HUANG Ke-shen, a priest
from Hangchow; and CHU Kung-chic, a layman from Shanghai.
CHUNG Huai-mo (Alphonsus), Bishop of Peking, has been named in
Chinese Communist propaganda as among the church officials supporting
the Chinese Communist policy concerning religion.
X. China Taoist Association (CTA)
This association was founded in Peking in April 1957? Its purpose is
to organize and control the adherents to Taoism, an indigenous Chinese
religion, whose members in the past have offered some resistance to the
Chinese Communists and have a history of association with secret societies.
In September 1957, Radio Peking announced the arrest in Chekiang Province
of leaders of a reactionary Taoist sect on charges that they planned to
instigate riots, engaged. in counterrevolutionary activities and plotted
assassination of CCP members,
