NOTE FOR: Director of Central Intelligence
FRO;*-*,: Director, Office of External Affairs
SUBJECT: Senator D'Amato and the Pope
Last October Senator D'Amato requested and received a briefing
on the circumstances surrounding the attempted assassination of
Pope John Paul II and the assassination of Egyptian President Sadat.
A record of that briefing is attached. In brief, the Senator was
and remains convinced that the Soviets were.behind the attempted
assassination of the Pope. There is no such evidence within the
.Agency. Recently the Senator's interest in this subject was
revived by Claire Sterling's article in the Reader's Digest on this
same subject, and is quoted as saying to Ms. Sterling, "I find it
shocking that you have not been approached by the Intelligence
Co-munity." Miles Lathem of the New York Post also wrote on this
subject and alleged that of External Affairs, who
attended the briefing last Octo er."bluntly told D'Amato to keep
quiet." Senator D'Amat?~s aide who also attended the briefing.has
since apologized tol end confirms that no such exchange took
Place.
