1. The "Huta i Zakiady Mschaniczne in. Stalina" (Stalin Iron and Steel Works, ;FIOR811
and Machine Building Factory, Rolling Mills) was located about 1 km north
of Laband (Q 51/I 38)G
2 These works were the former Hermann Goering Verke which were dismantled
by the Soviets in 1945 and 1946 and were rebuilt since 1949.
3. In the fall of 1950, five blas furnaces were operating, after the first
four blast furnaces had been rebuilt in the sunrer of 1949 and the fifth
had been put into operation in the summer of 1950.1 The output of each
furaee was 70 to 75 tons. The rolling mill, which was located
about 2.5 km f'rom the iron and steel works, was also under reconstruction
and was partly operating in the fall of 1950. Only persons employed in
the rolling nil were allowed to enter. The entire plant was supplied with
current by the Hindenburg (Zabrze) Power Station.
4. In early May 1952, in Gleiwitz
(Gliwice) that the production of tanks started in early 1952 and that
only Soviet type tanks of over 30 tons were manufactured.
5. The Iron and Steel Works and Rolling Mill in Laband smelted scrap and no
ores. The scrap came from the entire region under Polish administration.
Immense quantities stored along the canal near the harbor of Gleiwitz
were constantly increased by new shipments arriving by water.
6. In June 1951, the plant was reorganized in view of the planned production
nf tanks. The Iron and Steel Works and Rolling Mill were subordinate to
the Central Association for Metallurgy in Katowice and the Ninist-y for
Heavy Industry while the Machine Building Factory was subordinate directly
to the Yinistry for National Defense. Soviet officers were employed as
technicians in the Iron and Steel Works and in the Machine Building
Factory, First manager of the Iron and Steel Works was Karwat (fnu), a

Bole, who was transferred to Sosnowiec in early 1951. The name of his
successor was not known. Production nanager in the Machine Building
Factory was Engineer Lutoplawski (Thu), former director of the H.
0egielski Firm, Engineer Vaibrodzki (fnu) was in charge of the machinery.
In 1951, the labor force was 3,000 and worked in three shifts. Wages of
specialists were high, a lathe operator receiving up to 1,500 21:per
month and the technical personnel 1,000 to 1,800 21.
7. The works were guarded by industrial police in charge of control at the
entrance and by YMW (Security Bence) in charge of control inside the
works. The plant area was surrounded by a reinforced concrete wall, two
meters high, in the west, north and east. All employees had to show their
works identity card with photograph before entering the works area and
were allowed to enter only working places indicated on the identity card.
