The government of the USSR uses two channels for arousing public interest in science and technology: (a) Centralized channel. In this case the government arouses interest in scientific and technical work by direct methods. (1) In the government there is the "All Union Society for the Diffusion of Political and Scientific Knowledge." The particular work of this society is the issuing to workers of brochures and pamphlets, on various scientific and technical questions, for about 50 to 75 kopecks apiece. Besidessthis society has a large number of lecturers who read public lectures in the various cities of the country. Admission to these lectures is as a rule free or in some cases about 50 k apiece. Through the Ministry of Culture the government issues a large number of popular scientific films. These films are circulated for showing in organizations and enter- prises. They are also shown in the public movie theaters as short subjects. Magazinesolike "Ogonyok", "Smena", Znanie-Sila" and others, and newspapers print information regarding scientific and technical progress in popular form. In public places in the cities and villages, displays are also organized. (b) The scientific engineer-technical societies serve the popularization process by means of articles and lectures printed in newspapers and maga- zines and by brochures and pamphlets distributed to members of the societies. 2. This might be explained as follows: In the laboratories of the Ministry there are scientific engineer-technical societies in which are enrolled large numbers of workers. These societies carry on a great deal of scientific research. work. Divisional production-technical magazines and newspapers constantly maintain a large number of correspondents among the specialists in scientifc research. work. The articles which appear in technical magazines and newspapers allays have a great deal of response from specialists and scientific research workers. The private libraries of engineers usually contain a great deal of current technical material. The popular scientific lectures always attract a large audience. Interest is just as great in these lectures as it is in lectures on the international situation.
