compelled to labor to ease the situation. The people had been driven by
their long poverty to extreme egoism, lost to humanity. Among themes
there no longer m dated such old customer as sympathizing with other
apiritna].ly and meaterially, inquiring after the sick, and eocchecregirmg gifts.
They wwe popseseed by a sort of disillusion, to doh they were so resigned
as to think nothing about their future,, Just following their instinct to
sustain their lives. They were also no longer interested in the repeated
propagmnia of the government for the betterment of livin'. The people were
so ignorant of the SK gel situation that they believed that the SK people
should be in much the same plight as thee. Some people, particularly those
whose fang members had deserted to South Korea, appeared to have the
desire of going to South Korea. Such fardlies were covertl r,. but not
overtly, discriminated by the gmrerm rt., For instance, a job applicant,,
ary of whose family members had deserted to South Korea, was the last to
get it. Rven if he should get a job, no promotion waited for him.

In Wonsan, there were found a mvber of 1 ostitutes, some of whom ran
