1. A brook, two meters wide and 1 meter deep.

A road, which led from Chemnitz southwest to Glachau (approxi-
mately N 52-42, E 12-30), six meters wide, asphalt, very good
condition with ditches and trees on sides.
Site Layout
2. Reference is made to page 4 a sketch of the Wismut A.G. Main
Administration, on which identified:
1. Guard Post, wooden three by. three by four meters, tar paper, low-
pitched gable roof. One Soviet lieutenant and one enlisted man
in Soviet Army uniforms on 24 hour duty; both armed with pistol.

2. Wismut A.G. Main Administration Building - Constructed in 1947, this
brick building was painted a light grey, U-shape, measured approxi-
mately 90 m. around the outer perimeter, 10 in. wide, three stories,
red tile high-pitched gable roof. Building was well illuminated by
conventional electric light system. The entire building housed only
administrative offices. Approximately 400 people, 70% of whom were
Soviets, were employed in this building.
3. Barrack, wooden, 20 x 8 x 4 m., tar paper low-pitched gable roof,
single story, contained administrative offices.
4. Barrack, (similar construction and same purpose as point 3 above.)
5. Wooden stand which held hand-operated fire extinguishers.
6. Garages, brick, open on one side, low-pitched gable roof, 24 x 5 x 5 m.;
accommodated about six oars.
7. Soviet %ilitary.billets, brink, 26 x 13 x 13 m., two-storied, high- 25X1
pitched gable roof. 'S t enlisted personnel was billets
building. Number of personnel and unit designation unknown
Soldiers wore regular Soviet Army uniforms.

9. Fence, mesh wire, topped with barbed wire, 31 meters high, Fence
enclosed the entire 150 x 75 meter Wismut A.G. area.

3. The administrative center of Wismut A.G. was responsible for the planning
and operation of uranium ore mining projects in East Germany as well as
monetary appropriations, the acquisition of and assignment of personnel
to mining activities,
4. The entire area was fenced and guarded 24 hours a day by Soviet military
guards, Each employee carried a Wismut A.G. pass and presented it to
the guards at the gate on entry and exit. Passes for Soviet personnel
were dark red, to x 4,em., four pages, and included a photograph of the
bearer. Passes carried by the German personnel were on light brown
paper, 12 x 10 cm., with a three by four photograph. Both Soviet and
German passes were issued in Chemnitz and had to be renewed each year.
5. most of the German miners were very temperamental and heavy drinkers;
they often engaged in rebellious acts when their demands regarding wages
and working conditions were not met. Policemen were afraid to deal with
them. Because of their general behavior the Soviet personnel was
extremely nice to the Germans. A large number of miners suffered from
silicosis. Wismut A.G, employed approximately 780,000 persons.
6. The following is a common joke among the Wismut A.G. German personnel:
A train has just arrived at Wismut A.G. In Chemnitz with people seeking
jobs. Each applicant is introduced to a Soviet personnel director.
oviet.,personnel directors "What is your occupation, fellow?" First
applicant: "I am a roofer." Soviet personnel director: "O.K., you
will work underground in a shaft." Soviet personnel director: "And what
is your vocation?" Second applicant: "I am a bookkeeper". Soviet
personnel, director; "You also will work underground." Soviet personnel
director: "What is your occupation, dear fellow?" Third applicant: "I am
a clown." Third applicant: 'A clown is a man who can fool people." Soviet
personnel director: "O.K., you are hired as a leader in the recruiting
office."
