Community Requirements for Video Disc Based Map Library
Per reference, the National Foreign Intelligence Community continues to
have valid, unsatisfied requirements for video disc based maps (VDM). The
National Security Agency, for example, has committed resources to programs
under the premise that VDM would be available from the Defense Mapping Agency
in early 1986 (see enclosure); in fact, they have independently produced a few
VDM to satisfy some current needs. Others have seen VDM capabilities, when
used in conjunction with a personal computer and video disc player, realized
the potential applications, and embraced the concept enthusiastically. It is
anticipated that as the Intelligence Community implements VDM, the need for
standard VDM products will become increasingly self-evident. It is,
therefore, critical and imperative that DMA continue to lead the way in
producing VDM, expeditiously resolve its present video disc contracting
,difficulties, and provide VDM to the Intelligence Community at the earliest
possible time.
