The following is an explanation of the attached sketch map of the city of Chardsbcu in the Turkmen Reepublio, USSR t No. 1 is the Am Darya River. This river is 1,0(10-1,500 rosters wide, but Informants cannot estimate its depth. It floods occasionally during the winter. In 1945 it was in flood and caused some small de a in the city. It is navigable throughout the year by boats up to 100 tons. Sam of t base boats are passenger boats and others are freighters carrying farts products and petroleum for the requirenente of the city. Informants say that every de*y they saw 5-10 river boats on the river. No. 2 is the railroad line from Krasnowodsk to Tashkent. No. 3 is a railroad bridge over the Am Darya river. This bridge is of steel, with abutnents and piers of conoreto and steel. It is about 1,100 meters long and is 0-10 meters wide. At each of the entrances to the bridge there is a guard post of the ZIVD to protect the bridge. The field is located in a pima and is not saolosed by any wall or fenoe. It was in use before the war. During the war It was used by both military and oivilian pianos, but militmry planes no longer land here. Informsnts , on a visit to the field at the beginning of 1944, observed 10-12 tI engiuo passengor please. These planes wero Douglas type and had 24 seats. In another part of the field wore t -enGim and tour-engine military planes. In a third part of the field were a few small passenger planes. The dimensions of this area are about 300 by 300 Tasters. The locomotives running on this line are of either Soviet raenutboture, using coal for fuel, or American raanufaoture (imported after the mar), using fuel oil. A short train leaves Chardzhou at 10 a.m. twice a week and arrives at Kagan at 1=SO p.m. on Its way to Moscow, 3. Daily a passenger train leaves the city of Krasnovodek at 6 a.m., arrives in Ashkhabad at 12 a.n., in :Awry at 2 a.m. of the second day, and in Chardshou at 9 s.n.
