1. The People's Committee at Seoul is making a strict census and investigation
starting on 5 July. The object apparently is to find families of South
Korean soldiers, police, officials and others in order to punish them, Some
former South Korean police attempting to leave the city were arrested by the
North Korean military and shot on 2 July.
2. Since 1 July, youths between 18 and 35 have been conscripted for a Self-
Defense Corps. The training includes Comtnist indoctrination.
3. Each 1.,rge Soviet tank (UT 34) in the Seoul area had a crew of six men. The
commander is a 1 ropean Soviet or a Korean Soviet member of the Soviet army
with the rank of first frutenant. The other crew members are usually three
Koreans who have served with the Chinese Coimlunist army in i-aria ria and two
Koreans trained by the North Korean army.
4. In the Sobinggo area of Seoul on 5 July there were approximately 5000 infantry
troops, 7000 cavalry troops, and 1500 horses. In the former American-2:ission-
in-Korea fire station compound two miles south of the railroad station there
were anumber of trucks and tanks. t+orth Korean "JA. CS11 are billeted in the
Han-mi (Korean-American) hotel.
5. Ipprox.R nately 25 North Korean People's 4m troops are attached to each police
25X1 X station at Seoul.
6. By 10 July, the North Korean military and para-ud.litary forces at Seoul
numbered 300,000 North Korean People's Army troops, 200,000 Chinese Confiunist
troops (in North Lorean army uniforms), and 200,000 Soviet and Chinese volunteers.
7. In North Korea there are approximately 150,000 Soviet troops.
