located at Redstone Arsenal. FSTC produces and disseminates, with
.ACSI guidance, scientific and technical intelligence covering the
basic sciences and army-type materiel and equipment in response to
AMC and other user requirements., The DMII produces and disseminates
through FSTC scientific and technical intelligence covering missile
and space activity of concern to AMC and other intelligence users.
Amy Materiel Conxiiand (AMC) Intelligence Organization
The AMC is a user and'producer of foreign intelligence.. Its
'requirements for foreign intelligence are primarily in the scientific
and technical fields. Prior to the reorganization of the U.S. Amy
in 1962, responsibility for. research and development was divided on
a.commodity basis among the Army Technical Services operating under
the general staff supervision of the'Chief? of Research and Develop-
ment, DA. Supporting this research and development activity each of
the Technical Services had a technical. intelligence activity performing
under the general staff supervision of the Assistant Chief of Staff
for Intelligence, DA. '
The actual reorganization of the Army and establishment of AMC
resulted in the creation of a Directorate of Research and Develop-
ment. The Director of Research and Development (Brig. Gen. W. C.
Gribble, Jr.) is also the AMC "Foreign Intelligence Officer As
such he directs all AMC intelligence activities, is principal
advisor to the Commanding General/AMC (General F. S. Besson, Jr.)
on foreign intelligence matters, and staff supervisor of all AMC foreign
intelligence activities. As part of his immediate staff, and acting
as his executive agent in the management of AMC foreign intelligence
activities is a Technical Intelligence Division. This Division is
supported by a U.S. Army Special Security Detachment.
The principal AMC intelligence production elements. are the U.S.
Army Foreign Science and Technology Center (FSTC) and the Directorate

FSTC is organized into a Basic Sciences Group, Weapons Systems
Group and five functional divisions. The total complement of FSTC
is 425 personnel.
Technical support to research and development of materiel and
equipment peculiar to intelligence activities is provided by the
U.I. Army/Materiel Development Office (INIDO). 7I-MO is directly
subordinate to AMC, Intelligence and is located at Fort Holabird,
Baltimore, Maryland..
Each of the seven AMC major subordinate commands, (Munitions,
Electronics, etc.) principal laboratories and other activities has
a Foreign Intelligence Officer whose task it is to place his
command's requirements for intelligence on the production system,
to receive and disseminate the resultant intelligence product, .
.to coordinate the provision of scientific and technical consultant
advisory services to the FSTC, and to act as foreign intelligence
advisor to his commander. Each of the subordinate commands, under
FSTC guidance, participates in the program for analysis and
exploitation of acquired items of foreign materiel.
