"The Ustka harbor is situated inland, at, the .iver mouth. From the town, an
entrance gate leads to the harbor area through a dividing all. The width of
the main basin, on the stretch between the outlet to the sea and a ferry join-
ing the two banks, is about &I meters. The :tSIQ~P., training ship of the Polish
Navy, enters this basin without diffi.::.lty. The BARBARA ai_+o anchors here.
This stretch of the main basin is About 110) maters long. At the eastern side
of the outlet; to the see, stands a lighthouse..

5? "Further inland, beyond the ferry, the fishing harbor occupies a stret...h of
another 400 m of the main basin. On the eastern bank is a post of the Marines,
harbor warehouses, installations for pulling cutters ashore,nets etc., and
repair yards. The whole area is wired off and carefully guarded. It constit-
utes a prohibited area.
"There is no breakwater of any sort at the outlet of Ustka harbor; only
buoys are laid.
"On the sea coast, at both sides of the town, one can see watchtowers of the
WOP L Border Guard Troops These have become a marked feature of the Polish
coastal landscape. they are about 12 meters high, and are guarded
by day and ni,^ht by WOP soldiers armed with machine guns. The nests in which
the soldiers sit - popularly called 'cages' (Klatki) - have a telephone link
with the WOP station.
"In the harbor no one is allowed to. walk along the quays. WO?? soldiers are.
also on guard there.

9. "Wes': from the harbor, in a small good on the sea coast, are the former barracks
of the German HERMANN GOiRING Division. They were not destroyed in Wi,rld War II.
and are now occupied by the Polish Navy and the School of Naval Specialists
(Moraka Szkola Specjalistow). The area surrounding is prohibited to civilians
and surrounded with wire,I unke1~; laze being built
10. "The school trains specialists for Navy service. The men are selected from
conscripted Naval personnel.. The courses last six months or longer, depending
on the subject. The courses include:
(a) Motor service: mechanics, motorists, motor technicians.

Naval artillery and allied branches: ship and coastal artillery
personnel, torpedo service, Distance measuring (Da]mierzysci),
torpedo-mine service (Tcrpedn-Minerzy), mine-laying service.
(M'inerzy) .

Telecommunication: radio-telegraphers.
Navigation: navigators.

Deck and office specialists (Specjalisci Pokladowi I Biurowi)
31. "The school accepts selected recruits after a short recruit training period.
In addition to specialized courses, the pupils carry on a normal naval training.
They wear Polish Naval uniforms with a silver star on the sleeve.
12. "Every year, about 503 sailors complete the specialized courses in the school.
Th'. Polish Navy is not able to absorb such great numbers of personnel. It is
said in Poland that the specialiat$ may be mustered on naval units provided by
the USSR. Some of the Graduates after their three years of .:onpulsory naval
service, join the Merchant Marina The graduates of radio-telegrapher courses,
after passing .e uminations in the English .language, are given jobs in the
Merchant Marie
13. "The school has at its disposal a stretch of waters for use as. training waters
(Polifon l torski). These waters start from the area of the school and reach to
Darlowo, going as deep as five miles from Lawica (shallow) Slupska. The local
fishermen must avoid these training waterF. They are compcciled to sail up to
Ie..wica Slupska to do their fishing. Even the training ship DAR POMORZA and the
training yacht JANEK KRASICKI from Szse cin had t,o make a large circle around
the training waters. In that area, sharp-shooting exercises .,re organized.
Shooting is done at targets placed on small boats tni'ed by trawlers. The train-
ees fire from the beach and from moving vessels."
