Recruitment and Basic Training
5. Border guard soldiers are chosen directly upon induction into the army, and are
always sent to an o.tryad or t raining battalion far from their homes. Approximately
90 percent are DSNM members. Each Otryad has its own training battalion which gives
three months' basic training to recruits twice a year. These battalions, however,
are not capable of training all the border guard soldiers so that there are several
additional schools throughout Bulgaria where border guard recruits are sent to be
trained along with infantry soldiers. Those sent from their recruiting offices t6
the border guard training battalions attached to infantry regiments do not know
themselves that they have been chosen for the border guard until they begin
training. They wear infantry uniforms and are not permitted to tell the other
soldiers that they are in the border guard. The only border guard training battalions
are ..twb attached to rifle 6,regiments. in .Pleven and Ruse, ..which train
recruits for the Malko Turnovo, Elkhovo, Burgas and Varna otryads and one in Belograd-
chik. 25X1
NCO Schools
6. Border guard soldiers are sent to noncommissioned officers' schools immediately 25X1
after completion of their basic training. those chosen are
simple but industrious and conscientious soldiers rathern than clever or intelligent
ones. After graduation, they return to the units to which they were originally assign.
