Attachment No. 2 - A two-page. report, which describes naval vessels, observed at Leningrad. The report also describes the icebreaker KAPITAN MOSKOVICH and states that the passenger vessel MOLOTOV lay tied up at the oil tank installation. Attachment No. 3 - A two-page report, with eight sketches, which describe naval vessels encountered in Leningrad. On November 1956 a floating dock was observed in tow by an icebreaker, headed in a westerly direction. The dock was estimated to be 250-300 feet long and 80 feet wide. Navy IA naval vessel passed Leningrad Lightship, bearing 104?, 0.6 N.K. from Leningrad Lightship, course west. Description: length about 220 feet. (See sketch No. 1.) in the morning a similar vessel left from Kronshtadt an d proceeded passed the lightship on a westerly course. the following naval vessel was observed at Zhdanov Shipyard, length about 260 feet. (See sketch No. 2.) The guns from the two turrets on the afterdeck were removed,- and mounted again the following day. On the afternoon of'24,Nov. the ship was presumably moved to another quay in the shipyard since there was no break (channel) in the ice leading from the basin. On the slip there was a red leaded ship which is shown in sketch No. 3, length about 250 feet. The suomarine proceeded on various courses around the lightship. submarine arrived from Kronshtadt on a westerly course, and maneuvred on various courses around the lightship. Area: Leningrad a) Three cruisers at anchor in the harbor. b) One cruiser in a floating dock in the east part of the harbor c) 15 destroyers at anchor d) 12 KTBs hauled out on the mole. e) 8 submarines lying near a sailing ship. f) Various smaller vessels. Descriptions: a) All four cruisers were apparently. alike. b) The cruiser in the floating dock filled the whole dock and had were observed: a very great draft. A more detailed description cannot be given because of the short observation period. The destroyers were of various types. Three (or four) of them were somewhat larger than the others, and are described as flush deckers with very prono8nced deckline sheer. The others had raised foredecks. all of the destroyers had two funnels. All of then were freshly painted and had steam up. (People were observed several places). Insufficient time for closer observation. e) The submarines Were of various types. detailed description can be given. 25X1 between Kronshtadt and Leningrad, a naval vessel kmdwt outward bound*' Description: The vessel was of about-the size of and resembled a destroyer. 25X1 The''bow was rounded as on an icebreaker, and the 25X1 vessel steamed ve 7er easily t~urough the ice. Its hull is described as having a very longforedeck with a break down to the very short main deck aft of. then after funnel. several "nor" naval vessels were seen lying on the landward side of the floating dock in the southern part of Leningrad harbor, in the basin Iniediately north of the Zhdanov shipyard. Three larger vessels, all aliki, lying tied up side by side with bows pointing outward, were eonapicuous. Their main characteristics were strikingly high bows and large radar antennas in the masts. No detailed description can be given. No submarines were seen. On 23 November, near the oil tank installation at the entrance to Leningrad harbor, an inward bound destroyer we seen. It was heading for the Zhdanov shipyard. Description: flush decks with pronounced show, two tunnels, one mast forward of each funnel, striking radar antennas at both-mastheads. (Sketch). In addition to the "usual" direction finder at the forward edge of the bridge, the vessel had an unusual oontrivance at the forward edge of the bridge. The contrivance was described as of nearly spherical shape, with a nozzle or apput protruding forward. On top of the thing there was a square box. (Sketch). Navy A: small naval vessel stn,aowesterly course was observed near Leningrad lightship Length 120 to 150 feet, depth charge chutes on the after deck. Description: one mast, one funnel, t On December, the followng naval vessels were observed in Kronshadt harbor: One vessel of medium size possible one small mast forward of aft funnel, after deck lower than foredeck, but impossible to see where the break was. The vessel lay between some barges and a couple of small floating cranes. One old naval vessel with a vertical bow and two tall,thin funnels. One square-rigged sailing vessel -- probably a training ship. Name: "Selev" or something similar. There were strikingly few vessels to be seen in the harbord of both KronshAadtr and Leningrad. 2. The Leninarad lij&tshiv The lighship was in its usual position A large tug lay in the lightship's position. Ice conditions there was solid ice from about two nautical miles inside the lightship in to Leningrad. The approach channel had been broken up. the ice situation was somewhat improved, there being then several open leads and great cracks in the ice. The weather was milder.
