1.1 I a photograph of the new 4,000,000
electron volt Van de Graaff generator..n_e_aring..cbmpl'etion,at the, laboratory of Dr.
Otto Baier of the Miersdorf Institute. The generator column itself is
3.50 meters high and, when the outer housing has been installed, it will
have an over-all height of 5.30 meters. The outer diameter of the column
is 95 cm. The generator has a total of four bands, two of which are readily
visible in the attached photograph. The others are contained within the tJ
column and have somewhat smaller circumferences. Two accelerator tubes,
also developed in Baier's laboratory, will be installed in the ov-1 '^+

2. Although Baier has admitted frankly to colleagues that his generator is
a copy of U. S. models, he has been heard to claim that his model in-
corporates a significant improvement. It is possible to gain entry to
all four bands for repair and replacement without hoisting the column
with a derrick or doing any major dismantling of the generator itself.
