Up to 19119, control of the entire mining indust_y was centralized in the Federal Ministry of Mines in Belgrade. This sy:ytteem had, however, proved too cumbersome, and since 1 January 1950, the R,=!publics of Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Hercegovina were granted their own Ministries of Coal Mines. To facilitate its administration, the whole industry was divided into two separate branches under the control of the Fede:.l Council of Ministers. This Council is located at 12 Milosa Velikog U1.ca, Belgrade, and is com- posed of the four Ministers from the Republics, the Minister of Heavy Industry with the head of the Committee for the :energy and Extraction Industry as dlihairman. 3. The main part of the industry is controlled by `.'le Committee for the Energy and Extraction Industry, headed by Minister Sve`:azar Vukmanovic. The Committee is located at 16 Milosa Velikog Ulica; Belgrade, and is responsible for the mines and production of coal, including -Lignite, naphtha and gas, bituminous shale and the production of electric ;'ower. The control of pro- duction of electric power is sub-delegated to tie Ministry of Electric Power Production. The Committee is also responsible for geological survey and deep boring. L. The second part of the industry is concentrated in the Ministry of Heavy Industry under Minister Franc Leskosek. The Ministry, which is situated at 14 Milosa Velikog Ulica, Belgrade, is respon.; i.ble for the mines as well as plants and factories producing iron and steel, non-ferous metals, colored metals and fire-proof materials such as nagnesite and firebrick clay. The General Directorates of Black Metalirgy and of Colored Metals previously formed part of the Federal Ministry :.f Mines. 5. Very small and unimportant mines are controlled directly by local govern- ments, and do not come under the jurisdiction o"' the Federal Council of Ministries, nor the two branches. 6.
