FIRST TIME IN SYRIA ON
AT DAYR AZ ZAWR AIRFIELD APPROXI-
MATELY 220 NM NE OF DAMASCUS. AMONG THE
EQUIPMENT OBSERVED ON THAT DATE WERE 11
SA-2 LAUNCHERS AND FOUR EMPTY SA-2 MISSILE
TRANSPORTERS. ALL THIS EQUIPMENT HAD BEEN
REMOVED FROM THE AIRFIELD ON SUBSEQUENT
PHOTOGRAPHY.
AL QUSAYR AIRFIELD IS ONE OF SEVEN AIRFIELDS
IN SYRIA THAT HAVE HAD RUNWAY CONSTRUCTION

ACTIVITY SINCE THE JUNE 1967 WAR. IN
ADDITION, 12 SINGLE-BAY AND 2 DOUBLE-BAY
HANGARETTES HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED AT THE
AIRFIELD.
4. COLLATERAL: DURING A VISIT OF THE SYRIAN CHIEF OF STAFF,
MUSTAFA TALAS,TO MOSCOW IN AUGUST 1968 A
SUPPLEMENTARY ARMS AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED
WITH THE SOVIET UNION WHICH REPORTEDLY PRO-
VIDED FOR THE DELIVERY OF SURFACE-TO-AIR
MISSILES TO SYRIA.
THE 25TH INDEPENDENT MISSILE REGIMENT OF
THE SYRIAN ARMY WAS ESTABLISHED DURING THE
SUMMER OF 1968 AND CONSISTS OF THREE MISSILE
BATTALIONS AND ONE TECHNICAL BATTALION. IN
JANUARY 1969 THIS REGIMENT WAS REPORTED TO
BE STATIONED AT AL QUSAYR AIRFIELD WHERE
THE PERSONNEL OF THE UNIT WERE TO UNDERGO
A PERIOD OF TRAINING ON MISSILE EQUIPMENT.
SINCE 1 NOVEMBER 1968, SOVIET EXPERTS HAVE
BEEN ATTACHED TO THE REGIMENT AND HAVE

5. FIRST IDENTIFICATION: THIS MISSION
6. NEGATION DATE:
SITE CONSISTING OF SIX REVETTED LAUNCH POSITIONS, A REVETTED GUIDANCE
AREA, AND THREE REVETTED MISSILE-HOLD POSITIONS. ALL SIX LAUNCH
POSITIONS ARE OCCUPIED BY PROBABLE LAUNCHERS. THE GUIDANCE AREA IS
OCCUPIED BY A PROBABLE FAN SONG RADAR. ONE MISSILE HOLD POSITION IS
OCCUPIED BY A POSSIBLE MISSILE TRANSPORTER. THE OTHER TWO MISSILE-HOLD
POSITIONS ARE UNOCCUPIED. APPROXIMATELY 1,500 FEET NORTH OF THIS SITE
IS A TRAINING OR ALTERNATE SITE OF IRREGULAR CONFIGURATION CONSISTING
OF FIVE REVETTED LAUNCH POSITIONS, A PROBABLE REVETTED GUIDANCE AREA
AND ONE REVETTED MISSILE-HOLD POSITION. ONE LAUNCH POSITION IS OCCUPIED
BY A POSSIBLE MISSILE ON A LAUNCHER. ONE LAUNCH POSITION IS OCCUPIED
BY A PROBABLE MISSILE TRANSPORTER AND A PROBABLE LAUNCHER, AND THREE
LAUNCH POSITIONS ARE OCCUPIED BY ONLY PROBABLE LAUNCHERS. OCCUPANCY
OF THE GUIDANCE AREA IS UNDETERMINED BECAUSE IT IS COVERED, PROBABLY
