(TSR) This report summarizes the ground force activity of main force armies and independent units observed in the Wuhan Military Region, China, from The 25X1 report includes seven photographs, two location maps, and two tables listing unit locations. 2. Activity observed during 1979 and January 1980 within the four armies of Wuhan 25X1 Military Region (MR; Figure 1 and Table 1) consisted of deployment for, participation in, and return from the Sino-Vietnamese conflict by the 43d Army,' 54th Army, and one division from the 20th Army2 (see referenced document 2 for a summary of activity during that time period); extensive airborne training by the 15th Airborne Army (see referenced document 3 for a summary of airborne training during that time period); and normal training. No major new construction was observed within these four armies. 3. (U) Activity is summarized in Table I by army. 15th Airborne Army 4. ~ The 15th Airborne Army (Figure 1 and Table I) is in eastern Hubei Province and 25X1 northeastern Henan Province. The army headquarters and its support elements are in the vicinity of Xiaogan, approximately 30 nautical miles (nm) northwest of the city of Wuhan. The 43d Airborne Divi- sion is around Xiaogan, Guangshui, and Kaifeng. The 44th Airborne Division is at Yingshan, and the 45th Airborne Division is at Huangbei. 5. (TSR) No discernible change or significant activity was seen at the 15th Airborne Army headquarters during this period. 6. The 43d Airborne Division participated in the spring airborne training exercises.' The Z052d 25X1 Antiaircraft Artillery (AAA) Battalion of the division now appears to be housed at Kaifeng Army Barracks AL- 8 (Figure 2). This barracks had not previously been identified as being airborne related. Detailed analysis, however, has revealed that the barracks contains a mock door/airborne training platform, possibly a swing- landing trainer, twelve 37mm AA guns, and nine 14.5mm antiaircraft heavy machine guns (AAHMGs) Type 58 (ZPU-2). This equipment count agrees with the accepted organization of a AAA battalion of an airborne division.4 This battalion was previously identified at Kaifeng Army Barracks AL -5 with the 323d Field Artillery Regiment. A normal, low level of activity was observed throughout this period at the 127th and 128th Airborne Regiments. Kaifeng Airborne School and Barracks AL-2 was believed to house an airborne school and the 129th Airborne Regiment,' but the construction of Kaifeng Army Barracks AL-1I and the subsequent observa- tion of large parachute packing exercises at this barracks area suggest that the 129th regiment has possibly been relocated to AL-11, leaving only the school at AL-2. A low level of activity was observed within the 323d Field Artillery Regiment at Kaifeng AL-5 (Figure 3). The level of activity is low because of the additional inside storage (four vehicle equipment storage buildings with a total of approximately 80 storage bays) which is sufficient to store all the regimental equipment. An unidentified airborne unit of possibly battalion size was newly identified during the reporting period at Kaifeng Army Barracks Southeast (Figure 4). This barracks existed prior to 1973 and contains three swing-landing trainers, one mock door/airborne training platform, and one dual-lane obstacle course, but probably no vehicle storage buildings. In addition to the army barracks, the two airfields which support the 43d Airborne Division were also observed. No significant activity was seen at Kaifeng Airfield except during the spring airborne training exercises. Xiaogan Airfield was involved in spring training, and most of its aircraft appeared to be deployed to both Yingshan Airfield North and Huangbei Airfield West in August. 7. The 44th Airborne Division also participated in spring airborne training.' No significant 25X1 change or activity was observed within the barracks facilities; however, artillery training was observed from late July through at least late August at the north end of the associated Yingshan Airfield North. The order of battle observed during the training exercise is very similar to that observed at the 323d Field Artillery Regiment of the 43d Airborne Division. This similarity suggests that each regiment consists of one antitank (AT) battalion, one mortar battalion, and one 107mm rocket launcher battalion. The current table of organization and equipment (TOE)4 and ground order of battle (GOB)' disagree in this instance. The TOE lists an artillery battalion as being subordinate to an airborne division, but the GOB lists an Top Secret 1A R-0052180 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Top Secret RUFF 25X1 artillery regiment as being subordinate. At Yingshan Airfield North, a sustained increase in aircraft (four to 21 COLT as compared to normally zero) was also observed during late July to late August. This increase in the number of aircraft coincided with a reduction in the number of aircraft at Xiaogan Airfield. Aircraft are not normally observed at Yingshan North except during airborne training. 8. The 45th Airborne Division also probably participated in the spring airborne training.' No significant change or activity was observed within the division's barracks complex during this time period. The 325th Field Artillery Regiment area contains subareas for a regimental headquarters and three battalions with covered vehicle/equipment storage. This configuration also supports the artillery regimen- tal organization previously described for both the 43d and 44th Airborne Divisions. Aircraft activity at the division's associated Huangbei Airfield West suggests that a lower level of sustained airborne activity continued after the spring training through at least September with a high count of 11 COLT aircraft observed during August and September. Normally, no aircraft are observed here except during airborne training periods. This increase in aircraft coincided with a reduction in the number at Xiaogan Airfield. 20th Army 9. 1 The 20th Army (Figure I and Table 1) is located in central and northeast Henan Prov- 25X1 ince. The army headquarters and its support elements are in the vicinity of Xuchang, approximately 240 nm north of the city of Wuhan. The 58th Infantry Division is located around Xuchang, the 59th around Shangqiu, and the 60th at Mingjiang. 10. No significant activity or change was seen at the 20th Army headquarters. A consistently low 25X1 level of activity was seen at the Z007th Engineer Battalion. Normal activity was observed at the Z191st AAA Regiment until August when it was out of garrison. At that same time, a AAA exercise was underway 25 nm to the west, around Zhengzhou Airfield.' Normal activity was observed throughout the period within the 123d Field Artillery Regiment. 11. The 58th Infantry Division was the only unit within the 20th Army to participate in the Sino- 25X1 Vietnamese conflict.2 No significant change or activity was seen at the division headquarters for the remainder of the reporting period. A possible unidentified motor transport unit* was newly identified as being collocated with the division headquarters. The unidentified engineer battalion has yet to be located, although there is a possibility that it is housed at Xuchang Army Barracks AL-8. This would mean that the 20th Army's Z007th Engineer Battalion could have relocated to Kaifeng Army Barracks Southwest AL-1 where a KMM treadway bridge company has been observed along with a motor transport unit. This move would have occurred about the time that the Z191st AAA Regiment moved from this barracks to Kaifeng Army Barracks AL-10 in 1973, but it has yet to be confirmed. Normal activity was seen at the Z050th AAA Battalion after the division returned from Vietnam. A normal low level of activity was seen at all three infantry regiments (the 172d, 173d, and 174th). A fourth battalion area was constructed at the 338th Field Artillery Regiment by March. In August, elements of a probable BM-14/-17/-19 rocket launcher battalion were present in the newly constructed area (Figure 5). 12. The 59th Infantry Division did not participate in the Sino-Vietnamese conflict.2 Normal 25X1 activity was seen at the division headquarters throughout the reporting period. Three probable ARS-12 decon- tamination vehicles were newly identified within the division headquarters area (Figure 6). Both the 2048th AAA Battalion and Z008th Engineer Battalion exhibited a normal level of activity. A probable unidentified motor transport unit and possible local force light field artillery battalion have been newly identified as being collocated with the AAA and engineer battalions. A normal low level of activity was seen at all three infantry regiments (the 175th, 176th, and 177th). A maximum of nine ZPU-2 AAHMG have periodically been observed in all three infantry regiments (Figure 7). This order of battle probably reflects an upgrading of the air defense capabilities of the infantry regiments. Currently, the TOE4 lists six 12.7mm machine guns (MGs) Type 54 as being the organic weapon instead of the observed nine 14.5mm AAHMGs, Type 58 (ZPU-2). No significant change or activity was observed at the 339th Field Artillery Regiment. 13. The 60th Infantry Division did not participate in the Sino-Vietnamese conflict.2 Normal 25X1 activity was observed at the division headquarters throughout the reporting period. Normal activity was ob- served at the Z045th AAA Battalion with most AAA guns visible at all time. The locations of the unidentified engineer battalion and motor transport unit have not been identified from imagery of the division's barracks complex. A normal low level of activity was observed throughout all three infantry regiments (the 178th, 179th, and 180th). Nine probable ZPU-2 AAHMGs were also periodically observed at each of these regiments. A normal moderate level of activity was seen at the 265th Tank and 340th Field Artillery Regiments. 43d Army 14. The 43d Army is in western Henan Province (Figure 1 and Table 1). The army head- quarters and support elements are located generally around Luoyang, approximately 300 nm northwest of the city of Wuhan. The 127th Infantry Division is west of Luoyang, the 128th is east of Luoyang, and the 129th is centered around Nanyang to the south. All of the 43d Army participated in the Sino-Vietnamese conflict.' 15. No significant change or activity was observed at the army headquarters after the Sino- Vietnamese conflict. No significant activity was observed at either the Z005th Engineer Battalion, Z050th AAA Regiment, or 146th Field Artillery Regiment. Some equipment was normally visible at all three regiments. A low level of activity was seen at the 127th Infantry Division headquarters throughout the 25X1 reporting period. The unidentified divisional AAA Battalion was newly identified as being collocated with the division headquarters (area C-1)l as was a probable unidentified motor transport unit (area C-2).11 No significant change or activity was observed within the Z006th Engineer Battalion. A normal low level of activity was seen at all three infantry regiments (the 379th, 380th, and 381st). A low-to-moderate level of activity was seen at the 507th Field Artillery Regiment throughout the remainder of the reporting period. 17. No significant change or activity was seen at the 128th Infantry Division headquarters. A 25X1 low-to-moderate level of activity was observed within the Z057th AAA Battalion. The specific location of the Z063d Engineer Battalion has not been identified from imagery. A possible unidentified motor transport unit was newly identified as being collocated with the division headquarters elements (area B-I).7 A normal low level of activity was consistently observed within all three infantry regiments (382d, 383d, and 384th). A low-to- moderate level of-activity was normally observed at the 508th Field Artillery Regiment. 18. 0 A low-to-moderate level of activity was observed at the 129th Infantry Division headquarters. 25X1 The Z 102d AAA Battalion has probably relocated to a barracks area 500 meters south of area B-2." Exact locations have not been identified from imagery for either the unidentified Engineer Battalion or unidentified Motor Transport Unit. Normal low levels of activity were observed within all three infantry regiments (the 385th, 386th, and 387th). A normal moderate level of activity was seen at the 509th Field Artillery Regiment. 19. A previous report9 indicated that elements of the 128th Infantry Division headquarters 25X1 were seen in the Hanchuan area (at 30-39N 113-46E) along with elements of the 129th Infantry Division headquarters and its subordinate 385th Infantry Regiment in the Xiaogan area (at 30-57N 113-55E). The recent identification from imagery of a probable military farm at Xingou Army Barracks (Figure 8) is a probable explanation of the presence of these elements. This barracks, just 9.0 nm south-southeast of Xiaogan and 11.0 nm northeast of Hanchuan, was designed to house at least a regiment-sized unit and contains numerous physical training pits, practice grenade ranges, and two obstacle courses. The surrounding area is totally agricultural arid is divided into large, expansive fields spotted with numerous smaller civilian/military housing areas and agricul- tural machinery storage areas. A rail siding is approximately 2.0 nm to the southwest on the main east-west line from the city of Wuhan through Xiangyang to the Sichuan Basin. This probable military farm area is adjacent to the main road between Xiaogan and the city of Wuhan. The 43d Army units could possibly be rotated through this farm to produce food for the army. The identification of this probable military farm indicates that more farms may exist which have yet to be identified. 54th Army 20. ~ The 54th Army is in northern Henan Province. The army headquarters and support elements 25X1 are near Xinxiang, approximately 380 nm north of the city of Wuhan. The 160th Infantry Division is near Baiquan, the 161st is around Jiaozuo, and the 162d is around Anyang. All of the 54th Army participated in the Sino-Vietnamese conflict.'- 21. No significant change or activity was seen at the 54th Army headquarters after the Sino- 25X1 Vietnamese conflict. A normal low-to-moderate level of activity was observed at the Z001st Engineer Battalion. A moderate level of activity was usually observed at the Z002d Motor Transport Battalion even when the 54th Army was confirmed to be on the Vietnam border. This pattern of activity along with the design of the barracks area indicates the presence of a possible motor transport school. This school may be there in addition to, or instead of, a main force motor transport battalion. No significant activity has been seen at the possible unidentified signal battalion identified during the Sino-Vietnamese conflict' since it was initially seen. The reasons for this inactivity are unclear. A normal moderate level of activity was observed at both the Z051 st AAA Regiment and the 157th Field Artillery Regiment. 22. ~A normal low-to-moderate level of activity was seen at the 160th Infantry Division headquar- 25X1 ters. Some equipment was usually visible at the Z105th AAA Battalion. The Z034th Engineer Battalion exhibit- ed a normal low-to-moderate level of activity. An unidentified motor transport unit is probably collocated with the division headquarters. A normal low-to-moderate level of activity was seen at both the 478th and 480th Infantry Regiments. Nine probable ZPU-2 AAHMGs were visible periodically (as noted previously in other infantry regiments). No significant activity was observed within the 479th Infantry Regiment. An AT gun battalion and a howitzer battalion were usually visible within the 440th Field Artillery Regiment. 23. DA normal low level of activity was observed at the 161st Infantry Division headquarters. No 25X1 specific location has been identified from imagery for the unidentified AAA and unidentified engineer battalions or for the unidentified motor transport units. A normal low-to-moderate level of activity was seen at both the 481st and 482d Infantry Regiments. Nine probable ZPU-2 AAHMGs were visible at the 482d regiment only once (as noted previously in other infantry regiments). A low level of activity was usually observed at the 483d Infantry Regiment. One battalion of AT guns and a few howitzers were usually visible at the 441st Field Artillery Regiment. This regiment probably contains a 107mm rocket launcher battalion because one was observed on display in the regimental headquarters area along with one AT gun and two howitzers (probably one artillery piece from each of its subordinate battalions). Analysis of imagery has revealed that Daiwang Army Barracks AL-3 houses only the regimental headquarters. Subordinate battalions are housed as follows: an AT gun battalion at Daiwang Army Barracks AL-1, one howitzer battalion each at Jiaozuo Army Barracks AL- 2 and AL-3, and a possible rocket launcher battalion at Daiwang Army Barracks AL-2. -7- Top Secret IAR-0052/8o 25X1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Top Secret R U F F~ 25X1 24. A normal low level of activity was observed within the 162d Infantry Division headquarters. 25X1 Periodically some AAA pieces were visible within the Z044th AAA Battalion. No specific location has been identified from imagery for the unidentified engineer battalion. A moderate level of activity was observed within the Z004th Motor Transport Unit. A normal low-to-moderate level of activity was seen in both the 484th and 485th Infantry Regiments. Nine ZPU-2 AAHMGs were periodically observed at the 485th (as previously noted at other infantry regiments). A low level of activity was normally observed at the 486th Infantry Regiment. A moderate level of activity was seen at the ZOI6th Tank Regiment. Since at least all the tanks at 25X1 this regiment have been stored outside under canvas instead of inside the existing sheds. The reason for this recent change in storage method is unclear. A normal low-to-moderate level of activity was observed within the 442d Field Artillery Regiment. A BM-14/-17/-19 rocket launcher battalion was confirmed during the reporting period as being collocated with the artillery regiment. IMAGERY ANALYST'S COMMENTS 25. (TSR) No unusual or highly significant activity was observed within the main force armies of Wuhan MR following the Sino-Vietnamese conflict. 26. (TSR) Airborne training activity probably continued through the summer and into the fall season but possibly not at the high level observed during the spring months. All three airborne divisions appeared to contain a field artillery regiment containing an AT battalion, a mortar battalion, and a 107mm rocket launcher battalion. 27. (TSR) Each of the AAHMG batteries within the infantry regiments of the armies in Wuhan MR appeared to have been upgraded. Each battery probably now contains nine 14.5mm AAHMGs Type 58 (ZPU-2) instead of six 12.7mm AMGs Type 54 as previously believed. 28. (TSR) Most of the artillery regiments of infantry divisions appeared to have been upgraded with a rocket launcher battalion. Some of these contain a 107mm rocket launcher while others have been confirmed to contain the BM-14/-17/-19. 29. (TSR) The specific locations of a few battalion-sized units subordinate to the infantry divisions have yet to be identified from imagery (Table I). Significant progress, however, has been made during the reporting period in identifying several units which were previously unlocated. During this time, the specific locations of one AAA battalion and five motor transport units were identified from imagery. More military farms similar to this one may exist but have not been identified. 31. (TSR) Low levels of activity are normally observed at most army and division headquarters, as well as at most infantry regiments. In addition, low levels of activity are also normally seen at the remaining areas where substantial storage facilities are available. These low levels of activity are not conducive to determining decreases in activity or occupancy levels. Therefore, the levels of activity included in Table I serve as an instant reference for identifying those facilities where changes in activity levels would be readily identifiable. Part II. Independent Divisions and Regiments 25X1 25X1 32. One tank regiment of the Z006th Tank Division,' which probably participated in the Sino- 25X1 Vietnamese conflict, was observed within the main force independent divisions and regiments of Wuhan MR. A multiple rocket launcher regiment, possibly subordinate to the 2d Field Artillery Division, a new river-crossing regiment, and two motor transport regiments were identified. Activity of the independent divisions and regiments is summarized in the following order: tank divisions, tactical AAA divisions, field artillery units, ponton bridges, and motor transport regiments (Figure 9 and Table 2). 33. Two tank divisions are within Wuhan MR-the Z006th Tank Division is centered around 25X1 Baofeng, 210 nm northwest of the city of Wuhan, and the Z007th Tank Division is centered around Zhumadian, 150 nm north of Wuhan (Figure 9 and Table 2). 34. The headquarters for the Z006th Tank Division has not been identified from imagery. 25X1 Although a few barracks areas have been monitored, no specific activity has been observed which would relate solely to a tank division headquarters. The location of the subordinate unidentified reconnaissance battalion and unidentified engineer battalion was determined from imagery. The Z053d AAA Battalion was initially believed to be housed at Pingdingshan Army Barracks AL-5, but this can no longer be substantiated since AAA has not been observed there during the last two years. In addition, 75 percent of the vehicle storage buildings have been converted to barracks/quarters. This renovation reduced the number of vehicle storage bays from 196 to 70. The Z006th Tank Regiment probably participated in the Sino-Vietnamese conflict'- and a normal moderate level of -9- Top Secret IA R-0052/80 25X1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Top Secret RUFF 25X1 activity has been seen since its return. Consistently moderate activity has been seen within the motor transport unit of the Z025th Tank Regiment area, but no tanks were observed during the reporting period. A normal low- to-moderate level of activity has been seen at the Z026th Tank Regiment. The regiment headquarters of this unit is probably at Jiaxian Army Barracks where cargo trucks and a 37mm AAA battery are usually observed. The Z078th Field Artillery Regiment is actually a BM-14/-17/-19 rocket launcher regiment, and, therefore, is probably subordinate to the 2d Field Artillery Division instead of to this tank division. 35. ~ A normal moderate level of activity was observed in the headquarters area of the Z007th Tank Division. Most armored vehicles of the Z001st Reconnaissance Battalion were usually visible. The 37mm AA guns of the ZIIIst AAA Battalion were usually observed in open storage and consisted of twenty four 37mm guns instead of eighteen 37mm guns and nine ZPU-2 AAHMGs as listed in the TOE.4 The exact location of the Z004th Engineer Battalion is unclear. Its pontons have not been observed since May 1975 when initially observed at Xinyang Armed Division Headquarters and Infantry School/Barracks AL-I. Several bulldozers, however, have been normally observed collocated with the division headquarters. The normal complement of from 60 to 90 cargo trucks was observed at the Z016th Motor Transport Unit. The Z005th Motor Transport Unit appeared to be directly associated with the school at Xinyang Armed Division Headquarters and Infantry School/Barracks AL-I rather than subordinate to the tank division. A normal low-to-moderate level of activity was seen at the Z007th Tank Regiment. A normal low level of activity was seen at the Z008th Tank Regiment. A normal moderate level of activity was observed at the ZI12th Field Artillery Regiment where from 18 to 30 artillery pieces were usually visible. 36. ~ There are two tactical AAA divisions in Wuhan MR-the 63d at Rongyang, 260 nm north of Wuhan, and the 71st headquartered at Zaoyang, 90 nm northwest of Wuhan (Figure 9 and Table 2). 37. No significant change or activity was observed at the 63d AAA Division Headquarters. All of its subordinate AAA regiments (the 607th, 608th, ZI14th, and ZI17th) except the 627th consistently exhibited a normal moderate level of activity because some or all of the organic AAA equipment was being stored in the open. The 627th was imaged once in May and twice in August 1979. Though the AAA is normally stored in the open, only 12 cargo trucks/prime movers were visible in May, and no equipment was visible in August. The lack of activity in August indicates this regiment could have participated in the AAA exercise reported around Zhengzhou Airfield during that month.'' 38. ~ No significant change or activity was seen at the 71st AAA Division headquarters. All of the AAA equipment of the Z 118th, Z 120th, and Z 121st AAA Regiments was stored in the open, and a moderate level of activity was consistently observed. No AAA activity or equipment was seen at the ZI19th and ZI22d AAA Regiments. No activity has been observed at the ZI 19th regiment since June 1978 when only one battery of AAA was seen. Only one battery has been observed there since December 1976. No AAA-related equipment has been observed at the Z122d since December 1975. Therefore, it is believed that these two regiments are no longer housed at these locations. On recent coverage, however, two new AAA regiments were newly identified. The first was identified at Huayuan Internal Defense Division Headquarters and Army Barracks AL-I on June 1979.'' This regiment appeared to have arrived slowly and in separate pieces since about November 1977. The second AAA regiment was identified at Queshan Army Barracks West and Queshan Army Barracks Southwest. This regiment was observed under construction and consists of at least two probable 37mm AAA batteries and two probable 57mm AAA batteries. The regiment headquarters and 37mm AAA batteries are in and around Queshan Army Barracks West while the 57mm AAA batteries are around Queshan Army Barracks Southwest. AAA equipment was first seen there in February 1979. Field Artillery Units 39. 0 Only the 2d Field Artillery Division is in Wuhan MR. This division is in Queshan, approximately 140 nm north of the city of Wuhan. Two artillery regiments are in Wuhan MR-the Z078th near Jiuxian and the ZI 13th at Shahedian (Figure 9 and Table 2). 40. ~A moderate-to-high level of activity was seen within the 2d Field Artillery Division. The three subordinate regiments (the 28th, 29th, and 30th) appeared to periodically rotate out of garrison for possible training between May and November. It appears that much of the division's training is conducted to the west, near Queshan Army Barracks AL-2 where the Z007th Tank Regiment of the Z007th Tank Division is located. Artillery has frequently been observed deployed in the area immediately south of this tank regiment. The Z078th Field Artillery Regiment is a rocket launcher regiment, where 36 BM-14/-17/-19 have been observed since about August 1977. As a result, this regiment is probably subordinate to the 2d Field Artillery Division instead of the Z006th Tank Division as previously believed. The ZI 13th Field Artillery Regiment exhibited a moderate level of activity, and only cargo trucks/prime movers were seen. No confirmed artillery has been observed since at least July 1977. Ponton Bridge Regiments 41. Independent ponton bridge units were recently identified as probable division-sized units.''- This evaluation was changed to upgraded ponton bridge regiments after more current information was obtained.'" (TSR) One unidentified ponton bridge regiment (Figure 9 and Table 2) is at Huangshi Army Barracks and Echeng Army Barracks East-Northeast. The regiment headquarters and two battalions are housed at Huangshi while two additional battalions are at Echeng. This regiment contains PPS heavy girder floating bridge sets. Numerous PPS pontons and ferries were continuously observed on the Chingjjiang River (Yangzte River). 43. (TSR) Another unidentified ponton bridge regiment was newly identified under construction at Zhen- wajie Army Barracks East and Baiho Army Barracks West (Figure 9 and Table 2). The regiment headquarters and possibly one or two ponton bridge battalions are under construction at Zhenwajie, and two confirmed battalions are under construction at Baiho. This regiment contains TPP/LPP ponton bridge sets. Numerous pontons and ferries are usually observed on the Huanghe River. 45. (TSR) Six motor transport regiments have been identified within Wuhan MR. Most contain an average of eight motor transport companies (Figure 9 and Table 2). 46. OThe 19th Motor Transport Regiment is reported to be centered around Luoyang. Currently, 25X1 two motor transport regiments, either one of which may be the 19th Motor Transport Regiment, have been identified near Luoyang, The Z003d Motor Transport Regiment is housed at Luoyang Army Barracks AL-7, and a new unidentified motor transport regiment was seen under construction at Luoyang Army Barracks Northwest. Both contain eight subordinate motor transport companies. 48. _______ The 55th Motor Transport Regiment is reported to be near Xiangyang and is probably 25X1 housed at Huangzhuhe Army Barracks AL-1. This newly identified motor transport regiment consists of from 12 to 16 companies. 49. _______ The unidentified motor transport regiment housed at Linru Possible Army Barracks West 25X1 contains seven or eight motor transport companies and has exhibited a normal low level of activity. 50. The unidentified motor transport regiment at Dawu Army Barracks AL-1 probably contains 25X1 eight motor transport companies. A normal low level of activity was seen there. IMAGERY ANALYST'S COMMENTS 51. ______ No unusual activity was observed within the main force independent divisions and regiments 25X1 of Wuhan MR after the Sino-Vietnamese conflict. 52. ______ It appears that the Zl19th and Z122d AAA Regiments of the 71st AAA Division have 25X1 possibly relocated to the east along the main north-south rail line near Huayuan and Queshan. This possible relocation would increase their mobility, since their old locations were not near any rail lines. 53. The river-crossing capabilities within the Wuhan MR have also been improved with the addition of another river-crossing regiment. 54. The motor transport capabilities within the Wuhan MR have also been upgraded with the addition of the new motor transport regiment near Luoyang. It was also determined that the 49th Motor Transport Regiment and the 55th Motor Transport Regiment are probably at Daiwang Army Barracks and Huangzhuhe Army Barracks AL-l. -11 - Top Secret !AR-0052/80 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/10/04: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100050001-2 Top Secret RUFF Table 2.
