PREPARED RIVER-CROSSING SITES AND BRIDGE
COMPONENT STORAGE FACILITIES IN POLAND (S)
1. (S/D) This report discusses six prepared river-crossing sites and ten bridge component
storage facilities in Poland identified Figure I and Table 1).
These sites, which have been constructed over a period of several years,' provide alternate crossing
points over major water obstacles and enhance the ability of the Warsaw Pact forces to ensure the
forward movement of men and materiel in an operational environment.
2. (S/D) Six prepared river-crossing sites have been identified along the Oder and Vistula
Rivers, the major obstacles to the westward movement of ground forces in Poland. The construc-
tion of prepared river-crossing sites and the storage of bridge components along these rivers
improves the Warsaw Pact's capability to maintain lines of communication. These sites will proba-
bly be used for the replacement of destroyed spans, augmentation of existing bridges, or for short
gap crossings.
3. (S/D) Five of the six prepared river-crossing sites are rail served. The other site, which is
at Bydgoszcz, is a road-crossing site. At the rail-crossing sites, rail lines have been laid to the
banks of the rivers. Floating railway bridges will probably complete the link across the river when
the crossings are in use. The rail-crossing site at Kunice is on the Polish/East German border and
has a rail-to-road loading platform on the East German side of the river (Figure 2).
4. (S/D) The ten bridge component storage facilities are within 10 kilometers of the Oder or
Vistula Rivers. The bridge components at Rembertow are stored under cover (Figure 3). Ground
photography reveals that these components probably make up the Polish DMS-65 heavy-girder
bridge which was adopted in 1971.2,3 A similar type of bridge is at Swiecie, although some of the
components there are stored outside. The storage facilities at Rembertow and Swiecie are road
served. The other eight storage facilities are rail served and house components of an unidentified
type of heavy bridge. These components are stored in the open (Figure 4).
