GROUND FORCE MOBILIZATION, IRAQ/IRAN,
1. (S/D) This imagery-derived report summarizes the Iraqi and Iranian mobilization of major
ground force units between he report discusses the status of the home
garrisons, the departure dates of forces in preparation for or in reaction to the hostilities, and the
composition of the forces mobilized. Military unit designators and subordination (where used) are derived
from collateral sources.' This report supplements a previous imagery-derived report published in Decem-
ber 1980.2
2. (S/D) Major elements of at least six Iraqi divisions (four armor and two mechanized infantry)
were deployed from their home garrisons between (Figure 1). Four divisions were
garrisoned in central Iraq with headquarters at Baghdad, As Samanah, Baqubah, and Tikrit. The other
two were in southern Iraq with headquarters at Ad Diwaniyah and Az Zubayr. The departing divisional
elements included at least 34 tank battalions, 26 mechanized infantry battalions, and 18 artillery battal-
ions. In terms of military equipment, at least 1,200 tanks, 1,200 armored personnel carriers (APCs), and
300 artillery pieces left garrison. The combat units which left garrison departed with most, if not all, of
their equipment. However, a few armor units that included more than the standard number of tanks left
some tanks in garrison.
3. (S/D) The four Iraqi mountain infantry divisions deployed in northern Iraq and Kurdistan are
not addressed in this report.
4. (S/D) Major elements of at least six Iranian divisions (three armor and three infantry), three
brigades (one armor, one infantry, and one airborne , and six artillery groups/regiments departed their
home garrisons between One division was garrisoned in southwest Iran with
headquarters at Ahvaz, one in west-central Iran with headquarters at Kermanshah, three in the Tehran/
central Iran area with headquarters in Tehran and Qazvin, and one in northeastern Iran with headquarters
at Mashhad. The brigades and artillery groups/regiments were garrisoned in the Tehran area with head-
quarters in Tehran, in central Iran with headquarters in Khorramabad, Esfahan, and Shahreza, and in
south-central Iran with headquarters in Shiraz. The departing elements included at least 24 armor battal-
ions, 17 mechanized infantry battalions, and 41 artillery battalions. In terms of military equipment, at
least 400 tanks, 300 armored personnel carriers, and 300 artillery pieces left garrison.
5. (S/D) Most of the Iranian combat divisions that left garrisons did so with less than a full
complement of equipment. Most armor units initially departed garrisons with between 30 and 70 percent
of their tanks. However, one armor brigade departed garrison with 80 percent of its tanks (78 out of 98
tanks). The number of tanks remaining in some garrisons after the initial unit departures continued to
decline slowly, indicating that these tanks were probably either being repaired or receiving new crews.
Most mechanized infantry units of the armor divisions initially departed garrisons with 30 to 84 percent of
unit APCs. However, a few mechanized infantry units remained in garrison when the parent armor
brigades departed.
6. (S/D) Artillery units, in general, departed garrison with a higher percentage of unit equipment
than the armor units. Divisional artillery units departed with 55 to 90 percent of unit equipment, and
nondivisional artillery groups departed with 37 to 80 percent of their equipment. At least 12 artillery or
rocket launcher battalions departed garrison with all battalion equipment. The three 175mm self-propelled
(SP) gun battalions (36 guns) in the Iranian army departed garrisons with all equipment.
IRAQI GROUND FORCES
7. (S/D) Major elements of four armor divisions (the 3rd at Tikrit, the 6th at Baqubah, the 9th at As
Samanah, and the 10th at Baghdad) departed garrison in early/mid September (Figure 2 and Table 1).
8. (S/D) Elements of the 3rd Armor Division, at Tikrit in north-central Iraq, began departing
garrison between Major elements of two armor brigades and one mechanized infantry
brigade had departed by These brigades consisted of seven tank battalions, five mechanized
infantry battalions, and three artillery battalions. This division's SA-6 brigade had departed garrison by F-
9. S D Elements of the 6th Armor Division at Baqubah in east-central Iraq, departed garrison as
early as Major elements of two armor brigades and one mechanized infantry brigade had
departed garrison by These brigades consisted of six tank battalions, three mechanized
infantry battalions, and major elements of three artillery battalions. An increased level of activity related
to the mobilization of this division was seen at the brigade-level ammunition storage depot for the division
at Jalula as early as At that time, numerous ammunition crates and trucks were seen through-
out the facility (Figure 3).

between Major elements of two armor brigades had departed garrison by
One of the armor brigades, the 17th Armor Brigade at Baghdad, is the only T-72 tank equipped
brigade in Iraq. These brigades consisted of at least four tank battalions, two mechanized infantry battal-

garrison in August and were probably involved in the border skirmishing between Iran and Iraq during the
summer.

This armor training brigade deployed with 52 tanks and 39 APCs.

Zahedan in southeastern Iran. This unit was a partially formed division and probably had a very low
readiness level.
