Approved For Release 2Q2/07/10SFORIYP78-05939R0002000 0W02-9 3 December 1975 OTF1 Registry 7C~~ &byq MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT Follow-up Contact with Mr. Christopher F. Edley, Executive Director, United Negro College Fund (UNCF) REFERENCE: Memo dtd 10 Dec 74 fm OTR/CTP/PO; subj. Contact with Mr. Christopher F. Edley, Executive Director, United Negro College Fund (UNCF) 1. Because of the rash of publicity unfavorable to the Agency immediately following my initial contact with Mr. Edley on 3 December 1974, there was no follow-up at that time of the several suggestions Mr. Edley had made i area of m'nority recruitment. With the approval of 25X1 DD/Pers/R&P, I returned to New York City ovem er 1975 to determine Mr. Edley's current attitude toward the Agency and to obtain an update on his ideas on the identification of qualified black applicants for the Career Training Program and the Agency generally. Our meeting took place at the new headquarters of the UNCF at 500 E. 62nd St., New York City (which also houses the new offices of the National Urban League). 2. Even before I could state the purpose of my visit, Mr. Edley offered his views on the current situation faced by the Agency. He expressed strong disapproval of the leakage of classified information via the press and of the authorized public statements by members of the Congressional committees investigating CIA. His position is that the investigative purposes of the committees could be served without the disclosure of information concerning classified activities, and he vigorously stated his view that the national interests of the U.S. are not being served by such revelations. 25X1 Approved For Release 2002/(&EC. I asked Mr. Edley if he continued to feel that Mr. Walter Leonard, Assistant to Harvard President Derek Bok, would be willing to serve as a source of referrals on black professional recruitment prospects. Mr. Edley said he had no doubts about Mr. Leonard's attitude, but he telephoned Mr. Leonard on the spot and confirmed it. At my suggestion he gave Mr. Leo ard the name of the Offire of Va onnel representative Mr. Edley 25X1 advised Mr. Leo wou contact 25X1 Mr. Leonard at some mutually acceptable date. 4. Although Mr. Edley had no specific additional suggestions to make (other than those summarized in Reference), he did invite me to co tain contact with him. 25X1 I told Mr. Edley that had expressed an interest in meeting him and that we hope he could visit CIA Headquarters in Langley for that purpose as one of his regular visits to Washington. Mr. Edley said that he travelled to the area every four to six weeks and that he would make a point of visiting us on some future trip. I thanked Mr. Edley for his cooperation and reiterated our hope that we would see him in Washington early next year. 25X1 Approved For Release 2002/0R/LG&EIDP78-05939R000200070002-9
