Miscellaneous Economic Information This is UNEVALUATED Information THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) The DMZ in Sofia 1. The IiZ (Durzhavno Mekhanichen Zavod; State Machine Plant) is located in Sofia on Ilyansko Shose, in front of the "Galenus" Pharmaceutical Factory (see No. 6 of the sketch included as an appendix on pages 7 end 8). This is a small plant which is .in the process of being enlarged; during the winter of 1953-54+ work was started on a new "large" 1 -story building. This factory employs an unknown number of workers and produces industrial machinery, particularly the following: a. Lathes; b. Drills; and c. Miscellaneous machine tools. 2. The D KZ in Sofia includes the following buildings (as shown in the sketch on pages 7 and 8): a. A 1-story building approximately 30 x 8 meters in size; b. A 1-story auilding which is larger than the preceding one; work was started on it in the winter of 1953-1954 and is now near completion; and c. and d. Two 1-story buildings smaller in size than the preceding ones, but greater in height. The DKZ in Sofia 3. The DKZ ( Durzhavno Kauchukov Zavod; State Rubber Plant) "Georgi Dimitrov" was formerly known as the "Bakish" Factory and was enlarged following World War II. WQrk is still in progress on the plant enlargement. The factory is located on Ilyansko Shose in the Nadezhda quarter of Sofia (see No. 8 of the sketch included as an appendix on pages 7 and 8); it employs an unknown number of workers and 0 (NOTE; Washington distribution indicated by "X"; Field distribution by "#".) This material contains information affecting the Na- tional Defense of the United States within the mean- ing of the Espionage Laws, Title 18, U.S.C. Seca. 793 and 794, the transmission or revelation of which in any manner to an unauthorized person is prohibited by law. 2 February 1955 NO. OF PAGES 8 REQUIREMENT NO. Tires of an unidentified type; b. Rubber boots; and c. Miscellaneous rubber products. 4. The DKZ in Sofia includes the following buildings (as shown in the sketch on pages 7 and 8): a. The main processing building, a 2-story .construction approximately 30 meters in length on the side fronting the street; b. c. A nev An old 1-story 1-story building, near completion; and building, size unknown. Behind the buildings mentioned above there are others, the size and exact location of which are unknown Iand other construction work is in progress. The MTZ in Sofia 5. The MTZ (Myarki i Tegluzhki Zavod; Weights and Measures Plant) is located on the Ilyansko Shose in front of the Rubber Factory (see No. 9 of the sketch included as an appendix on pages 7 and 8). It is a small factory which existed prior to World War II and occupies a 1-story )uilding approximately 15 x 8 meters in size. It produces weights, balances, and measures. Furniture Factory in Sofia 6. A furniture factory is located on the Ilyansko Shose in Sofia and occupies a 1-story building approximately 20 x 10 meters in size (see No. 10 of the sketch on pages 7 and 8). The STZ in Sofia 7. The STZ (Silno Tokov Zavod; High Current Plant) "Vasil FColarov" is located on Ilyansko Shose in the Nadezhda Quarter of Sofia (see No. 1 of the sketch on pages 7 and 8). This is a new factory which started production in 1948-1949, and is subordinate to Elprom. 8. This plant includes the following buildings: a. A 2-story building approximately 50 x 20 meters in size in which are located the directorate, offices, technical laboratories, and various services; b. Two masonry 1-story buildings with vault-type, glass-covered roofs, of unspecified dimensions, where the main production units are located; and c. Other smaller 1-story buildings. 9. The factory is surrounded by a fence and is connected by a railroad spur with the main Sofia railway station. The factory employs approximately 2,500 workers in three 8 hour shifts. 10. The STZ in Sofia produces the following: a. Electric motors; b. Generators; c. Transformers; and d. Electrical materiel for heavy electrical installations. The PPZ (Pamucher-Predachen Zavod; Cotton Spinning Plants) "Ernest Telmann" is, in the Nadezhda industrial quarter of Sofia, adjacent to the "Galenus" Pharma- ceutical factory (see No. 5 of the sketch on pages 7 and.8). A 1-story L-shaped building, approximately 120 x 150 x 30 meters in size, where weaving and general processing is carried out; b. A 1-story building in which the directorate is located; and c. A 1-story building used as a warehouse. The roofs of these buildings are covered with tile and the entire area is surrounded by a fence. The factory employs approximately 2,500 workers on 2-3 shifts and produces cotton textile.- in quantities unknown to informant. The PPTF in Sofia 12. The PPTF (Pamuchna Predachna i Takachna Fabrika; Cotton Spinning and Weaving Factory) "Georgi Dimitrov" formerly known as the "Fortur-" Factory, is located on Ilyansko Shose (see No. 11 of the sketch on pages 7 and 8). The factory employs approximately 2,500 workers and produces cotton textiles. The "Galenus" Chemical and Pharmaceutical Factory in Sofia 13. The "Galenus" Factory is an old establishment constructed in 1935. It is located on Ilyansko Shose in the Nadezhda quarter (see No. 4 of the sketch on pages 7 and 8). This factory is subordinate to the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare and to the Directorate for Medicines and Health Materials. 14. The "Galen-Lis" Factory includes the following buildings (as shown in the sketch on pages 7 and 8): a. A 2-story E shaped building with the following-approximate dimensions: main body, approximately 70 x 20 meters in size; the three wings each approxi- nately 30 x 20 meters in size. The building has a tile roof. It houses the 'ollowing: (1) Directorate and offices; (2) Unit for filling inoculation vials; (3) Unit for the preparation of pills; (4) Vegeto-chemical unit for alkaloids; (5) Unit for synthetic chemico-organic anti-tubercular substances (tubigal); (6) Unit for chemico-inorganic synthetic substances; (7) Analytical laboratory; (8) Bacteriological laboratory; and (9) Unit for wrapping and packaging; b. A chimney for the heating plant (now not in use since the factory receives electricity and steam from a thermoelectric power station); c. A laboratory for barium sulfate; a 1-story building approximately 20 x 6 meters in size. d. A unit for "Eternol" (a vegeto-chemical unit for the production of alkaloids with an ether base); a 1-story building like that mentioned in Para. 14 c, above; e. A sulfamides unit; a masonry 1-story building approximately 30 x 7 meters in size; f. A storeroom for inflammable substances (Benzine, Benzol, etc.); a concrete building, with tile roof, approximately 15 x 6 meters in size; this building is partially underground and protrudes above the ground level by 1.5 meters; g. An antipyretic unit (against aches in general) producing articles such as antipyretics, aspirin, analgesics, etc.; this is a masonry building approx- imately 30 x 7 meters jn size; h. The main warehouse for chemical materials such as ether, acetic acid, and acetic anhydride; this is a masonry building with a tile roof, approximately 50 x 10 meters in size. A 1-story building, covered with tarred planks used as a depot for demijohns with acids; 25X1 ii. Open air depot for filled and empty demijohns; 1. Depot for poisonous substances; a semi-underground building like that mentioned in Para 14 f. above, in which are stored nitrobenzol, sulphur!-- active (sic), mixed with sulphur dioxide, etc.; 25X1 m. Quarters for the industrial militia, a small shed approximately 8 x 4 meters in size; n. A store room for empty vials, a shed approximately 12 x 6 meters in size; and o. A 1-story building approximately 20 x 6 meters in size in which are locA+oA the gatekeeper, firemen, dispensary, and various services. 25X1 15. The "Galenus" Factory is surrounded by a wire fence and is guarded by 7-8 men belonging to the industrial militia. 16. Electric power is supplied to the factory from the nearby new thermoelectric power station known as "TETS" Nadezhda. The factory is equipped with one truck and 2-3 carts. \ ?25X1 17. personnel at the "Galenus" Factory: a. Petko Stoenchev, pharmacy doctor, director general of the factory b. I4yubomir Pavlov, technical director, chemist c. Dr. Nikola Yonov, chief of the bacteriological unit; d. Khristo Borev, chemical engineer, chief of the organic chemistry unit e. Nikola Gospodinov, former officer, chemical engineer; f. Dimittr Apostolov, chemical engineer; g. Stanislav Stanev, chemist; h. Nikola Kostov, pharmacist; i. Stefan Nikolov, pharmacist, chief of the vial uni J. Virgil Kamedunski, a pharmacist. 18. The "Galenus" Factory included 38-40;-technical personnel.., among whom three pharm- acists, 8-10 chemists, and one doctc '--'for the bacteri ,:$.~4s.1 bureau. No Soviet technicians are working at the plant. During 1953, a v.iiiet woman specialist was employed for six months at t;ha factory in the antipyretics unit, demonstrating several Soviet manufacturing methods. 19. The factory employs approximately 300 workers (50-60 men and 240-250 women) in one shift from 8 a.m, to 5 p.m* with one hour break from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. 20. The factory does not produce modern medicinal specialities. Its production is based on sulfamides. following products: a. Piogal (sic); b. Rimifon; c. Tiokoll; d. Streptochit;2 e. Antifebrine; f. Miscellaneous antineuralgia products (such as antipyretics, aspirin,. analgin, etc.) SECRET -- V. S. Vials for miscellaneous inoculations; and J. Barium sulphate (for a total of up to 5 tons per year). Production quotas are rarely met;. for the year 1954, the quota for inoculation vials is 22 million, but it will be difficult for such a quantity to be produced.. 21. The production of the "Galenus" Factory is for Bulgarian domestic consumption.. Small quantities of unspecified types of vials are shipped to China. 22. For the most part raw materials come from the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, From the USSR in particular come acetic acid and ace ".anhydride. Vials for inoculations are imported from Hungary. 25X1 23. The MIZ (Mediko Instrumental No Zavod; Instrument Factory) was built in 1940,-and was formerly known as Ustrem. It is located adjacent to the "Galenus" Factory (see No. 3 of the sketch on pages 7 and 8) and is subordinate to the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare and the Directorate of Medicines and Health Materials. This factory consists of a single 1-story,"L"-shaped building, approximately 40 x 30 x 20 meters in size. The factory is surrounded by a fence. It employs. approximately 100 workers in two eight hour shifts. 24. The MIZ in Sofia produces the following _nstruments: a. Miscellaneous medical instruments for surgery, gynecology, and'stomatology; and b. Equipment for hospitals and dispensaries, such as metal and glass cabinets for instruments, hospital and dispensary beds, syringes, etc. Miscellaneous Products, Factories, and Depots 24. A factory for the production of bandages and gauze is located in Sofia on Belo More Street, in the vicinity of the Workers' Hospital. 25. The "Pektin Zavod" is a factory for the production.of pectin and is located in Krichim (N 42-03, E 24-26). This is a new chemical plant which went into production in 1953. It extracts pectin from fruit used in the production of marmalades and jam. 26. A depot for materiel of "Sovbolstroi" is located adjacent to the: Rubber Factory located on Ilyansko Shose (see No. 7 of the sketch on pages 7 and,8). 25X1 Ministry of Health Directorates 27. The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare is composed of 5-6 general dir- ectorates, among which a.. Upravel:enie Medichinska Promislenost (Directorate of Medicines and Health Materials) directed by Dr. Todor Koserkov; b. The Apotekno Upravelenie (Directorate of Pharmacies)- directed by Boris Yordanov until 1 duly 1954 c. Upravelenie Snabdutelno (Directorate of Supply) which furnishes health materials to hospitals, clinics, dispensaries, etc.; and d. The Upravelenie Kurortno (Directorate of Resorts). Air Defense Units 28. A local antiair defense unit is situated in all industrial establishments. A portion of the workers selected among the older men or those who are not subject SECRET -- U. S. These members follow courses of elementary instruction in order to go on duty immediately following the air bombing of an establishment. The Sofia "TETS" 29. The Sofia "TETS" (Thermoelectric Station) is of new construction and went into operation in 1949-1,950- It is powered by coal and its equipment and installations are of Pzechos7_ovak manufacture. It supplies electrical energy and steam to all the factories in the area; because of the continuous breakdowns it works only half time. It is located in the area between the main railway station of Sofia and the Nadezhda quarter (see No. 12. of of the sketch on pages 7 and 8).. 1. Probably "Thiocol" (Potassium guaiacol sulphonate), an expectorant: 25X1 2. Probably "Streptocid", a sulfanilamide. SECRET -- U. S.
