CLASSIFICATION CONFIDENTI COUNTRY Poland and Polish-Occupied Germany REPORT TOPIC Bunker Installations under Construction near Warsaw, Poznan, Gruenberg and Landsberg on the Warthe River EVALUATION PI ACE OBTAINED DATE OF CONTENT DATE OBTAINED DATE PREPARED 10 September 1954 25X1 REFERENCES 2 PAGES ENCLOSURES (NO. & TYPE) 25X1 - REMARKS This is UNEVALUATED Information 25X1 1. In October 1953, a large bunker installation in the area southeast 25X1 of Warsaw which had been under construction since about August 1952 was still uncompleted. The building site was about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Wiazowna (R 53/L 28) on a hill on the edge of the woods west of the highway from Warsaw to Lublin (S 52/R 18). A large radio 25X1 transmitting station, which consisted of numerous masts arranged in several lines and interconnected with wires, was located north- northwest of the building site. The casting of the concrete ceiling of the. underground installation was observed last in October 1953 25X1 The ceiling was several meters thick. Mechanics who were constantly employed at the building site by the building enterprise, whose seat was Danzig said that the bunker had three underground 25X1 levels and was equipped with an elevator, Czech-made Diesel engines, and highly sensitive measuring instruments from Fast Germany. All matters concerning the construction of the bunker were subjected to secrecy. The members of the labor force were forbidden to talk about 25X1 the project. All workers were civilians and they were accommodated in hutments near the building site. At an unspecified date Polish and Soviet officers inspected the construction work at the building site. 2. the fall of 1953, another building site was observed near 25X1 TP 53/X 26). This site was located in the northern section of e woods, 800 meters south of the Poznan-Antoninek (P.53/X 36) railroad station. The Antoninek stet Mn was on the rxilrnad line frnm Poznan to Zwarzedz (P X Construction activity at the site was began on in early 1953. The site included an excavation for the foundation, about 501 meters square, which allegedly was deep enough to hold a multi-story building. The construction of foundation walls had been started in the fall of 1953. The labor force employed at the site totalled about 100 workers. In the fall of 1953 another minor building site was located southeast of Poznan, in the Debina woods, about 700 meters west of the Poznan-Staro%eka railroad station, west of the Warthe River and south of the railroad line which crossed the woods and the Warthe River. This building site was designated Debiec. In the Approved For Release 2007/09/04 : CIA-RDP80-0081OA005000770005-0 I CONFIDENTIAL/CONTROL - - 2 fall of 1953, activities at the site were confined to excavation work which was done by dredgers. Since the area was restricted, no other details were observed. Several pumps were allegedly used to eliminate the ground water in this fairly low-lying area. This building site, which was not far from completion a was supervised by Polish Army officers, was located on the edge of the woods north of the highway from Gruenberg to Grossen (0 53/W 00). The distance between the building site and the intersection of the highway from Gruenberg to Crossen and the old railroad line from Gruenberg to Sprottau (P 52/B 35) was about 1,600 meters. The so-called Wilhelmshoehe (hill) was located east of the building site. The entire installation was cordoned off by barbed wire. The restricted area was overcrowded with workers who were accommodated mainly in hutments inside the building site area. Most of the workers were convicts. Free Polish civilian workers, most of whom were specialists, were also employed at the site. The construction machinery together with the operators required was furnished by several state-operated bui4iiag enterprises. structures observed at the site included one brick ti?dI with two wings which was still under construction in the fall of 1953. Source's statements on the underground installation were based on hearsay. This building site was also subjected to secrecy. 4. As early as 1952, concrete work at another building site near Landsberg (0 53/W 08) was completed by a building enterprise from Warsaw. The site was located in the woods, 1 kilometer north of Wepritz (0 53/W 0'3), west of the road to Merzdorf (0 53/W 08). An underground bunker installation allegedly was located in this woods. In 1953, several small brick buildings were cots trueted near this installation in the woods. The dimensions of the installation near Gruenberg exceeded those of the entire installation near Landsberg. Even if the present information is substantiated, it is undetermined that all of them are$ constructed for military purposes.
