Aotive-Paasiyc Acoustic Torpedo In the stunner of 1946 F Prof . BRON . suggested that he would'wolcomo ideas on a orpe c wo d out-manoeuvre FOXER. He gave no indication. of what he would likes but asked to be kept informed at all stages, The "idea of an active-passive torpedo was then suggested by the team and talked over in committee.. Thus the idea was born in Germany, but it was carried further in Russia. The plan was developed so far that a descr.iptive.casay.of 100/150 pages with accompanying drawings was produced, but there had been-no experiments with any mock-up. torpedo was envisaged that-would home on FOXER with its passive component, and then at:a.certain sound intensity the active component would out in and the torpedo home on the real target. The passive component was to be a unit developed formerly for SCH'MNK- STORCH, and was only in the laboratory stage. It consisted of a 3nagneto- striation oscillator which moved or scanned through 1300.- The arc was divided into four sectors -and by comparison of the sound magnitudes "in these sectors. a more exact definition would be av ilable compared with a signal given by a 25X1 fixed hydrophone. The signals wereemombered or stored by means of delay switching. The active component was the GEIER system in all. detail. he believes that 35-40..kg was the range for the passive component and 80 os for the. active component. He knows that 25 . K/cs for passive and 80 Vas for active. had already been tested by the Germans, and the passive range had 'not been altogether satisfactory. He says that these figuros were: not bound to be adopted, and thew could be changed at any time.. The team had to,construot a .torpedo control equipment suitable for German use. It was believed that the Russians would do the rest themselves. The impression was that the torpedo, wa1-intended to be very fasts am probably driven by: hydrogen peroxide. The Germans. were not given any data for noise ranges., so could not make any plans for the arena.' uncer consideration by the team en ailed as much work as five torpedoes fitted with LUT. 2. LERCHE Torpedo a the team dvalt, with bits. 'of it unit was never made however, that a complete !PhF~ ,had, however,, a. complete set of drawings from AEG anu with these instructions the. only difficulties they wo have n?mac ng a. torpedo would be with materials. ng. BOESE was n the laboratory in L 1i0 OSOV making tests. This was in early 19 and in fact signals were sent over a wire about 10 metres long., the Russians were satisfied. After this teat the parts were left. In the stores: they laid.about for years and then disc e red bit by bit.. The Unit was not taken away as a whole. the idea of LERCHE has been dropped as later experiences 'were carried on only with ZAUNKOENIG. There were no other German torpedo experts in- Germany who could develop such a thin ,,.but a Russian group could easily have taken over. the system was that Russians who had worked with Germans in Germany did not work with them in Russia. These Russians were capable,, clever people, but in Russia their replacements were second rate.. Thus it appears that. there was a Russian group working on the problems somewhere else.. It was believed that BRON had a laboratory in LENINGRAD (not NII. 400)s and he could, very well have been sorting out the Germans laboratory results there. 3. Test Tank wanted everything in his testing station that the Germans had so whether the tank would function or not it still had to be.built. 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X I 1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2007/10/19: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA005200610008-2
