L'his letter report su.:scarizes the research performed under i'as
Order ~1o.~i~~2 during the period fro:: Noverioer 21 through Dece:rber 31, 1960.
mhe cbjective of this research is to develop a second co~aplete
~"odel 2 incinerator having increased blower capacity and versatility, and
to provide a.n e:ctr~ 1oirer compartment (including the motor-blo~rer assengly)
for use ;,,*ith the first ~ 1ode1 2 incinerator which was developed previously
under this 11ask Order and shipped to you. Both motor-blower assemblies
and switch gear are to operate interchangeabl;f on 50- or 60-cycle current;
one ~r_otor-blo~srer assembly and the corresponding starting switch is to be
used on 208, 220/40-volt, ~-phase current, and the other on 115/230-volt,
single-phase current.
the target air-flow rate is 800 cfm at 5.5 inches of water pressure
and is intended to provide burning rates 10 to 20 per ce_~it hit:ilei? tho.n arose
obtained in the first yodel 2 unit which you have. i'hus, at the 50-cycle
speed of 2, ,;00 rpm, the motor-blower asse~zblies used in tiZe proposed units
~?ri11 have to deliver a higher air-flow rate than that obtained from the
assembly suppL_ed :;ith tine first hodel 2 incinerator. With motor-blower
asser:~blies of such capac~_ty,~:t the t;0-cycle speed of 3, 700 rpm there will
be excess fan pressure; this can be handled by providing for setting the
throttle in a partially closed position, in order to avoid excessive air flow.
wring this research period, fabrication of the one coinustion
section and the ttti*o motor-blower-asse;nbly compart:~:ents was nearly completed.
