THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
On 27 November 1951, the first School for Fcreign Trade in the GDR (German
Democratic Republic) was inaugurated in Plessow near herder by Georg Randke,
Minister for Intra-German and Foreign Trade.
The school off %,!s regular 2-year courses, and accelerated 5-month courses
for the training of personnel necessary to the fulfillmen.. the Five-Year
Plan for Foreign Trade.
Qualified teachers with academic training and/or many years' experience in
various aspects of foreign trade act as instructors. Instruction is based on a
carefully deeloped methodology and covers both theory and practice. Training
is focused not only on specific phases of foreign trade, but also on the de-
velopment of potential political and social cadres.
Great emphasis is given to the social sciences. The ideological and po-
litical orientation of the lectures is based on the teachings of Marx and Lenin,
and staunch friendship for t."P USSR is fostered in the future foreign trade
personnel.
Russian-language courses are given special importance in the curriculum.
The 2-;-ear course devotes 640 class hours to the study of Russian. Students
are required to read USSR newspapers and other USSR publications bearing on
foreign trade.
Lectures on GDR trade policies are also stressed in the school's training
program. As an introduction to these lectures, the theory and history of trade
is discussed.
Sub;?cts taught, in addition to the practical elements of foreign trade,
such as import, export, and finan.:o, include foreign trade planning, political
and economic geography, raw material administration, merchandising, and market
analysis. In accordance with the example set by the USSR Institute for Foreign
Trade, a large number of class hours have been seL aside for these subjects.

Business arithmetic, physical training, and German are included is the cur.?icu-
1um. Instruction in German is aimed particularly at increasing the student's
Lnowledge of German literature. Students will also be provided with a basic
knowledge of foreign literature, particularly of Russian and Soviet literature.
